From Reuters:

A Pakistani counter-terrorism court has sentenced to death a man who allegedly committed blasphemy on Facebook, a government prosecutor said on Sunday, the first time someone has been handed the death penalty for blaspheming on social media.

[...] Shafiq Qureshi, public prosecutor in Bahawalpur, about 500km (300 miles) south of provincial capital Lahore, said Raza was convicted for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad, his wives and companions.

"An anti terrorism court of Bahawalpur has awarded him the death sentence," Qureshi told Reuters." It is the first ever death sentence in a case that involves social media."

...but if a detailed examination turns up none of the above I will print out this post and eat it.

Posting this as anonymous coward :-)

I didn't say you would get to watch the eating.

I also find your doubts of my personal integrity slightly offensive (i.e.: the unspoken supposition that I would renege on a pledge - even given publicly yet somewhat anonymously). Although I can understand how your living amongst those without personal honour would lead you to this allegation.

So let's up the ante: bring forward the said detailed examination and I will further reduce my (already doubtful) anonymity by posting a video of me eating the post, as promised, if needed.

Note that - for reasons you should find obvious - I will not accept *any* document provided by or under the influence of local, regional or national authorities, nor produced by any personnel with ties to the area (including business interests and self, family or friends living there).

The obvious reason being that those are the only ones who realistically could have any knowledge on that?

        The obvious reason being that:

        - if I am wrong, there is no reason

        - if I am right, anybody participating in the investigation runs a serious risk of ending up dead, their friends maimed and their family raped. Or something to that effect.

The only thing an investigation under these circumstances will turn up is that, yes, that guy was a total blasphemer and it's A-OK to kill him. Which is totally believable (sarcasm!).

For _that_ kind of investigation, I am not going to eat a sheet of paper ...

Why out of curiosity? I mean I personally find it weird that you think a reason beyond what was stated was needed given that they barely need to try to prove the first one [wikipedia.org]. But probably wouldn't downvote you for it.

Would probably like... Spray paint a swastika on your forehead and like... Racist and stuff instead.

On your forehead, I don't mean I'd actually racist you.

    Well maybe.
