The results are in: The Raspberry Pi 3 is the most desired maker SBC by a 4-to-1 margin. In other trends: x86 SBCs and Linux/Arduino hybrids get a boost.

More than ever, it's a Raspberry Pi world, and other Linux hacker boards are just living in it. Our 2017 hacker board survey gives the Raspberry Pi 3 a total of 2,583 votes — four times the number of the second-ranked board, the Raspberry Pi Zero W.

[...] Note that by "votes" we are referring to Borda rankings that combine 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice rankings [...]

So, which if any credit-card-sized computers are you lot playing around with?

It's a cyclical thing. From a FreeBSD perspective, we have limited resources to support ARM boards. We want to support the ones that have the highest likelihood of giving us some return on investment (i.e. that will create new contributors). These boards are the ones with the longest support lifetime and the widest install base (RPi and BBB are close to the top of this list). When we do get new developers as a result of these boards being supported, they're interested in improving the support for these boards and so the support quality improves. As an end user, this cycle means that the boards with the largest installed base are likely to be the best supported.

I understand this. Every odd board cannot be supported, but especially with FreeBSD, I would choose a BBB over a Pi any day, even if the former is less 'popular'.

It doesn't have to be part of the biggest 'herd' to be the better choice for a given project.
