In a coordinated campaign across 14 states, the German police on Tuesday raided the homes of 36 people accused of hateful postings over social media, including threats, coercion and incitement to racism.

Most of the raids concerned politically motivated right-wing incitement, according to the Federal Criminal Police Office, whose officers conducted home searches and interrogations. But the raids also targeted two people accused of left-wing extremist content, as well as one person accused of making threats or harassment based on someone's sexual orientation.

"The still high incidence of punishable hate posting shows a need for police action," Holger Münch, president of the Federal Criminal Police Office, said in a statement. "Our free society must not allow a climate of fear, threat, criminal violence and violence either on the street or on the internet."

The raids come as Germans are debating the draft of a new social media law aimed at cracking down on hate speech, a measure that an array of experts said was unconstitutional at a parliamentary hearing on Monday.

The measure, championed by Justice Minister Heiko Maas for passage this month, would fine Facebook, Twitter and other outlets up to $53 million (50 million euros) if they failed to remove hate speech and other forms of illegal content.

The left ladies and gentlemen.

A bizarre criteria for evaluating worth. You must spend a lot of your life on IRC.

Whatever. You are going for personal attacks, so I will say I hold your opinions to be of very little value as well. But it's because your opinions are partisan and mostly nonsense. I don't have to be on IRC to see that.

Personal attacks? You know me better than that. When has anyone here ever been in doubt if I was issuing a personal attack?

As for IRC, that's where the staff do the vast majority of our communicating, so we're almost always logged in. Quite a lot of discussion goes on there that you're apparently unaware of and an uninformed opinion of both myself and EF means your opinion is objectively worth very little.

Whatever goes on behind the curtain doesn't matter much. I see the end result. And it's disturbing.

But whatever. You won't ever understand that you are alienating other people with your EF-supporting rants. And unless that's cleaned up, SN will never get broader support.

I'm signing off SN now. You've convinced me to get away from this forum. Congratulations!

Now go back to your IRC hole and complain about "niggers in my yard", muslims, and leftists to your heart's content.

Yeah. This sucks. We used to have a fun IRC channel. The usual problems happened. They were dealt with.

One day this guy starts spamming the channel with pages of swear words. It went on for weeks. Most people moved to another channel.

The channel died. People just could not stand to be in there. The guy spamming the channel with pages of swear words was the IRC admin.

A couple of years later I moved state. I actually miss that IRC channel now.

Some people don't realise how much of a dick they are being.

These are the people who would enjoy coming up with the most horrific insults while gaming, or chatting in IRC. They never grew out of their teenage troll mentality. They get jollies from pissing people off online, then hide behind freedom of speech and such so that they can sound superior. What else can we say? And yes, they have been steadily ruining this site.

Supporting the right to free speech is a bad thing?

Never, ever suppress free speech: if you don't like what you hear, walk/turn/look away.

The suppression of free speech is what you should be attacking: if we take away Ethanol's free speech, should we take away yours as well? What should we suppress and what shouldn't we?

DRAW THE LINE... right now, draw the line of what should be suppressed and what shouldn't.

Ethanol can be funny.... just like Andy Kaufman: sometimes, you just gotta watch closely to get it.

Yup, it is a very high form of humor. Like those "just a prank bro" tools. Trolls bring shit to the discussion, it can be funny when done obviously enough, but EF and TMB are not master trolls. Their trolls are lame shock value crap which happens to be close enough to their real values that it is near impossible to tell. Their humor relies on knowing their character very well so you can see when its a troll.

So, while I like the freedom of speech aspect, these trolls are promoting censorship by showing that freedom results in this kind of shit. Long time users have already left the site or stopped getting involved with the discussions. Anyone on the fence will look at EF and the AC troll here and very possibly switch to being pro censorship.

No where does the freedom of speech require giving people a platform. I would prefer that everyone does away with hate speech laws and we regulate discussions ourselves as communities. But that might hurt the delicate sensitivities of the libertarian base here. Besides, this place is just the private playground for these people, they obviously don't care about quality of discussion. It is more about having a sandbox they can shit in without getting in trouble.

Eth is actually funny sometimes. I mean he's still going to hell but at least he's given us a few laughs along the way. Then there's J-Mo, Uzzard, and sometimes Runaway, who are just the cancerous melanomas on the ass of the body politic.
