The US Supreme Court has partially lifted an injunction against President Donald Trump's travel ban.

The Supreme Court said in Monday's ruling: "In practical terms, this means that [the executive order] may not be enforced against foreign nationals who have a credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States.

"All other foreign nationals are subject to the provisions of [the executive order]."

Mark this down as a win for Donald Trump. The path to entry into the US for immigrants and refugees from the affected nations, if they don't have existing ties to the US - either through family, schools or employment - just became considerably harder.

The decision marks a reaffirmation of the sweeping powers the president has traditionally been granted by the courts in areas of national security. There was fear in some quarters that the administration's ham-fisted implementation of its immigration policy could do lasting damage to the president's prerogatives. That appears not to be the case.

Everyone (at least those close to sane) fully expected SCOTUS to overturn the lawless Ninth Circus so that really isn't news. They knew they would be overturned, they are trying to invent a new power to impose a delay and cost on any Executive Order that the Cathedral doesn't like. No, what was truly newsworthy was the 9-0 vote with the only dissent being from Justices who wanted to make this a simple "toss it out of court" rebuke to the Ninth. When you can't even get R.B.G. or one of the other Progressives, you know you overreached bigtime, and the Ninth, the Media and the Hollywierd Left were all fully invested in the idea this was such an obviously unconstitutional order that it called for mass resistance. Nope. 9-0.

I've been trying to find out what the vote was, but the mass media I read didn't report on that. 9-0. I don't know if the ban makes sense, but the relevant law is clear that the president can arbitrarily ban foreigners from the country.

"Favour"... I think that speaks volumes to to proposition that your allegiances lie elsewhere than U.S. national security.

The flaw in your thinking is that you believe that you are safer leaving them "over there", rather than letting (some of) them "in here". I think that is a rather dubious proposition. Leaving the problem to fester over there is not a good idea, IMHO. Right now, there are at least two countries that are essentially lawless because of Daesh. If we don't take some of the pressure off, others will almost certainly tumble and fall. Right now, somewhere around 25% of the population of Lebanon are refugees; it seems almost inevitable that they will be headed for another civil war within the next ten to twenty years. There are ominous signs that Turkey is suffering under the strain as well. And Jordan, one of the most pro-western countries in the Middle East, has over half a million refugees inside their borders. We can ill afford to let Jordan slip into chaos. And, regarding national security, refugees and other immigrants are already put through an extensive vetting process, Trump's assertions notwithstanding.

When your Muslim colleagues start growing beards and wearing robes to work, make sure you have a good preplanned escape route in case one of them has an allahu akbar moment.

I'm glad you understand about serving with fellow Americans. I learned to respect a lot of different people. Puerto Ricans, Phillipinos, Mexicans, black and white Americans, males and females, a gay (You read that correctly, ONE gay man, out of a couple dozen gays I met in the Navy, earned respect from me. No drama queens were able to do that.)

And, yeah, I do respect all of the Muslims who served beside me. Let me count them up. 0 plus 0, times 0, divided by 0 - whoops, my calculator is throwing an error.

Oh, I understand. The calculator is smart enough to know that Muslims aren't American.

The decision has not been overturned. The Supreme Court has decided to hear the case in October. Meanwhile, they have a granted a lifting of the injunction for some people. The final word will probably be out some time next year, if they decide to pass judgment on the issues after the completion of the stated reason for the ban (a 90 day review) has rendered the specific case moot.

The stay on the ban wasn't overturned -- it was temporarily partially lifted, but severely restricted. SCOTUS has yet to hear the case.

The decision to TAKE the case was 9-0, but the decision to partially LIFT THE STAY was 6-3. Hardly unanimous.

This wasn't a "win" for Trump, though he wants to spin it that way. All it does is allow the ban to be enforced for those coming from those countries if they have no family, residency, work, school, or other significant ties to the US to give them reason to be in the US. The main opposition to the ban was from companies (Microsoft and Oracle for example) who were concerned their VISA-holding employees and their families wouldn't be able to return to work from a trip overseas.

This basically grandfathers in every VISA holder and their families and anyone who wants to come to the USA to visit close family as well as anyone who has been offered a job, been accepted at a university or even invited by a university or business to visit for whatever legitimate purpose.

So... what's left to ban exactly? Vacationers? Potential immigrants who haven't been offered a job yet? It's one thing to say one is allowed to scrutinize to this level, but it's another to implement. (How exactly are they going to verify someone doesn't have the ties they claim to have? Are they going to hold someone in a cell until they get verification from a Fortune 500 company or University that they were indeed invited to speak at an event?) I doubt they bother with it until the SCOTUS case is settled sometime about a year from now.

Talk about a hollow, temporary victory.

It really is starting to look that way. I'm guessing he's far out on the ocd/aspergers/whatever spectrum and has a good handle on tech stuff, but social issues are such a mess that he just gets his worldview straight from conservative talking heads. Or maybe he just googles his favorite sites and cobbles together an answer, not vetting the sources for sings of "fakery". The possibilities are endless with someone so wacked from reality.
