The US Supreme Court has partially lifted an injunction against President Donald Trump's travel ban.

The Supreme Court said in Monday's ruling: "In practical terms, this means that [the executive order] may not be enforced against foreign nationals who have a credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States.

"All other foreign nationals are subject to the provisions of [the executive order]."

Mark this down as a win for Donald Trump. The path to entry into the US for immigrants and refugees from the affected nations, if they don't have existing ties to the US - either through family, schools or employment - just became considerably harder.

The decision marks a reaffirmation of the sweeping powers the president has traditionally been granted by the courts in areas of national security. There was fear in some quarters that the administration's ham-fisted implementation of its immigration policy could do lasting damage to the president's prerogatives. That appears not to be the case.

I am not in favour of Trump's travel ban. In fact, I do volunteer work with refugees, helping them to acclimate to American life. Many of them are Muslim; I also have work colleagues who are Muslim. I can handle having them as neighbours just fine, thanks. I would suggest that you really should venture out of your cocoon and meet some new people; you might even find the experience enjoyable. Just sayin'.

"Favour"... I think that speaks volumes to to proposition that your allegiances lie elsewhere than U.S. national security.

The flaw in your thinking is that you believe that you are safer leaving them "over there", rather than letting (some of) them "in here". I think that is a rather dubious proposition. Leaving the problem to fester over there is not a good idea, IMHO. Right now, there are at least two countries that are essentially lawless because of Daesh. If we don't take some of the pressure off, others will almost certainly tumble and fall. Right now, somewhere around 25% of the population of Lebanon are refugees; it seems almost inevitable that they will be headed for another civil war within the next ten to twenty years. There are ominous signs that Turkey is suffering under the strain as well. And Jordan, one of the most pro-western countries in the Middle East, has over half a million refugees inside their borders. We can ill afford to let Jordan slip into chaos. And, regarding national security, refugees and other immigrants are already put through an extensive vetting process, Trump's assertions notwithstanding.

When your Muslim colleagues start growing beards and wearing robes to work, make sure you have a good preplanned escape route in case one of them has an allahu akbar moment.

My Muslim colleagues are fine people. Frankly, they are almost certainly much classier than you will ever be. Just sayin'.

No one is arguing for unrestricted immigration. They are arguing against blacklisting entire nations because a few loonies committed terrorism. It won't do anything to stop terrorism and is nothing more than fear mongering and pandering to ignorant scaredy cats like you. Security theater at its finest.
