After a two week survey period, Phoronix has published the results from their inaugural Linux Laptop Survey. There were 30,171 responses and while there may be some additional follow-up articles in the days/weeks ahead, the initial review has been published. One goal of the survey was to gather feedback about the current state of GNU/Linux hardware compatibility. Overall the situation is better than it was even a few years ago, but there are still many problems here and there. The situation is summed up in two pages, complete with diagrams, over at Phoronix.

Admittedly my needs are fairly ordinary, but I picked up a used Dell E6400 a couple of weeks ago. It arrived with a somewhat dubious Win10 install. I figured that a Dell would be well supported by Linux, so I downloaded a Mint ISO, tossed it on a USB Stick, and did a fresh install, overwriting Windows. No research, not even a fast Google, just trusted that it would do the job.

And it just works, out of the box, with no problems that I can see. For web stuff and LibreOffice it's actually more than zippy enough to keep me happy. Not bad for under $200 overall.

    my needs are fairly ordinary

...as are those of the vast majority of folks.
Folks who actually put significant stress their expensive bleeding edge hardware are few.
"Good enough" has been a thing for a lot of years.

The amount of stuff that is available without Windoze on it (or without paying The Windoze Tax yet again) is enormous.

There's one particular vendor with a glowing reputation for customer satisfaction.
They've got lots of stuff that meet these specs. [google.com]
