Two years after Cecil the lion was killed by a trophy-hunter in Zimbabwe, prompting global outrage, his son may have met a similar sad end. Xanda, a six-year-old lion with several young cubs, was reportedly shot on a trophy hunt. He is said to have died outside the Hwange National Park in northern Zimbabwe. The lion had been fitted with an electronic tracking collar by Oxford University researchers.
The BBC's Africa Correspondent, Andrew Harding, reports that at the age of six, Xanda was old enough to be legally targeted by big game hunters. These individuals, many from the US, UK and South Africa, pay tens of thousands of pounds for the deadly pursuit - thereby funding the staff who protect other wildlife in the National Park.

I perfectly understand hunting for food and population control. But going on a canned hunt and shooting something for no other reason than to say you shot something is so lame it makes zero sense. You see them standing over the animal all smiling and I wind up laughing because, you know, you were at a very safe distance with a rifle and scope while escorted by some other tracker/hunter type who probably used the animals tracking device to locate it. You did nothing but pull a trigger. It's like handing out trophies to kids who participated.

I suppose you're also against sport fishermen? You know, the ones who catch and release while guys like me fillet the meat off while they're still alive.
If you can't deal with killing other creatures for whatever reason, you're an evolutionary failure in an apex predator species.

Twist to the "hunting the hunters" game suggested above: When the hunters think they get a break to rest and eat, there are hooks in their food, which dig into their jaws and drag them underwater in the nearest pond for a minute or two. On a vote of the public deciding whether the hunter is too small, the hook is ripped out of the mouth, and the hunter is thrown back to dry ground.

i think it's pretty lame too, but i could kind of understand it (not agree with, nor for myself to participate in), if they were trophy hunting animals that were more plentiful. trophy hunting species that are on the verge of extinction (or even threatened) seems sooo freaking stupid.
