Known for its bouts of heavy smog, the city of Los Angeles on Thursday announced plans to have a fleet of fully electric, zero-emissions buses by 2030.

Authorities in the US metropolis said the project, which involves the purchase of 2,200 vehicles, would cost some $1 billion over the next ten years.

"Today's vote represents an enormous investment in the future of a healthy and prosperous Los Angeles," said Hilda Solis, a Metro Board Member.

The current fleet operates on compressed natural gas (CNG), seen as the most environmentally-friendly option when the buses were purchased in the 1990s.

A CNG coalition had previously protested the transition, arguing that, while the goals were worthy, electric buses were not yet a reliable technology.

People in LA ride the bus? That is not the image that comes to mind when you see the highways (or whatever they are called) in and around the city. Filled with cars in every lane and moving at about a snail's pace.

I wonder if the fully electric zero emissions bus will manage to jump the gap in the road ... The turbine on the bus will probably be making noise like a Stuka when it gets up in speed.

Did a pop culture reference go over my head? Fully electric buses won't have turbines.

    - People who can't afford a car
    - People who see commute time as an opportunity to read/use their handheld thingies
    - Tree huggers who have a destination beyond bicycle range
    - People who would rather not arrive at their destinations worn out from dealing with traffic
    - People who use the bus to make a connection to the very fast, ever-expanding light rail system [vox-cdn.com]

Activist and Pacifica Radio presenter Eric Mann and The L.A. Bus Riders Union have been pushing for electrics.
(The new rolling stock should out-live the age of fossil fuels.)

highways [...] Filled with cars in every lane and moving at about a snail's pace

...and, the fewer vehicles on the road, the better it gets for the remaining vehicles.
For this reason, The Bus Riders Union thinks that public transit fares should be $0.
...and I'll add that the 1-person-per-2-ton-vehicle bunch should be footing the bill.
