Hello Games has released a free update to No Man's Sky which introduces multiplayer to the game, a missing feature that caused an earlier backlash from players.
The update also includes 30 hours of story and various fixes and improvements to gameplay, balance, new abilities, and more. Full details at metro.co.uk or watch the release video on YouTube.

Go play Everspace instead, it's much better.

Everspace... And Sublevel Zero... And NeonXSZ... And really any of the new space rouge-like procedurally generated games on the market that don't try to be both an FPS and 6 axis shooter.

Even outside the genre you get rouge-like procedurally generated gems like Dead Cells that you'd be better off with even if you're not into platformers since they're just that good.

Really, it's the golden age of procedurally generated games out there and people keep bringing up the odd turds that just released too soon for whatever reason :/

      procedurally generated games

I see "no mans sky" as being too sandboxy for story based people and not sandboxy enough to entertain modded minecraft or detail oriented dwarf fortress people.

Its like a sandbox where you only get one cup of sand and one plastic shovel.

People mod it plenty: http://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/ [nexusmods.com]

It's just too casual and plain: Maybe more story and mechanics will address this but right now it's boring. And these are separate issues to modablity.

On the basis of this recommendation (and on being ill, unable to do much that involved getting out of bed, and really bored), I bought it from GOG. I'm not convinced that it's more fun than Rebel Galaxy, but it's definitely entertaining. It made a bad first impression, because it sets the graphics settings to extreme, which have about a 0.5-1 second control lag, making the combat impossible. Turning it down a bit made it playable (and didn't seem to noticeably impact visual quality). I haven't got very far into the story, but there's some nice variation so far.
