Mic has an article on the upcoming Solar Eclipse across the USA, focusing on one particular group of observers: Flat Earthers, who believe that the sun and moon rotate around each other above the Earth's surface.

...astronomers (both professional and amateur) aren't the only groups excited for this once-in-a-lifetime event. Another, more controversial community believes the upcoming eclipse could provide overwhelming evidence to support their cause. These people are flat Earthers, and they believe the solar eclipse will prove once and for all the Earth is not a sphere.

The article describes some of the proposed arguments from the newly resurgent, and apparently quite serious, flat earth community.

    > Creating an artificial selection pressure is effectively eugenics, which is generally considered immoral and unethical.

When women reach the age of 18 (perhaps 21?) if they have not yet had a child, they are given the option to receive a free nonreversible sterilization treatment. Should they wish to adopt later in life they would of course be free to do so. On top of the procedure being free they will also be compensated $x, perhaps $5,000.

      - Major monetary incentive to avoid early pregnancy.
      - Completely voluntary
      - Rewards to help the benefited individuals get back on their feet and begin to make a live for themselves, get out of the current situation, etc
      - The eugenic side of things would result in a major longterm improvement on both the socioeconomic situation and the average level of 'intelligence'
      - The reward would likely be 'free' from a governmental perspective. It's a given that the individuals that would be most like to utilize this program would be low income individuals. Compare the lifetime social costs of these individuals recklessly reproducing versus the $5,000 and it's a drop in the bucket.

The largest downside here is that it's arguably sexist, but the nature of our reproduction makes male sterilization much less effective. Overall births per capita are strictly controlled by the number of fertile females where even a small fraction of the current number of males could still result in the same overall births per capita.

And if it's not clear, the reason behind the requirement of never having a child is to ensure that you don't inadvertently create some twisted world where women intentionally seek to have children in their late teen years before then opting into sterilization.
