SoylentNews is people

Firefox 57, which is slated for release on November 14, will "only run WebExtensions", according to Mozilla.

This is expected to break compatibility with many existing Firefox extensions, and in many cases there aren't WebExtensions-compatible alternatives available for these extensions.

During some recent discussion at Slashdot, it became clear that some users have nearly all of their extensions classified as "legacy", and susceptible to breakage.

Members of the SoylentNews community, if you use Firefox, how many of your extensions are set to no longer work with Firefox in the near future?

If Firefox 57 breaks compatibility with your existing extensions, will this finally be enough for you to discard Firefox and find an alternative browser to use?

Will this extension breakage, and subsequent loss of users, effectively end the viability of Firefox as a modern web browser?

Unless many, many more of my oft-used extensions are updated, I'll be switching browsers when they break.

How do you know if something is Legacy or not? Wait, found it. Another example of "great" UX/UI: so empty pages, so many clicks.

See https://www.ghacks.net/2017/03/09/firefox-legacy-add-on-or-webextension-how-to-find-out/ [ghacks.net] which also says "The method is not super comfortable unfortunately, as you have to check each add-on individually."... of course, why give a single page? I found a quicker way that avoids searching as suggested: go to about:addons, click More, use the homepage link if already AMO based, or the "Rating X reviews" link to jump to AMO then click name in top right to view the main page. Now you can click the permissions "button", as mentioned in the page.

The note at the bottom of ghacks doesn't mention which version starts showing the Legacy mark in about:addons, because I'm checking and there is no such text even for extensions that I know are not supported. FF52ESR FYI. It would make the process a lot faster.

Mozilla, you have many and deep troubles. Yahoo deal will end, Google is happy how you keep cloning and sliding in sub single digit percentage.

PS: Oh, and FF55 profiles can't be downgraded! Got a link in that ghacks site. https://www.ghacks.net/2017/08/02/you-cannot-downgrade-firefox-55-profiles/ [ghacks.net] Beware about updating.
