Amazon.com is exploring a technology first developed for the U.S. military to produce tasty prepared meals that do not need refrigeration, as it looks for new ways to muscle into the $700 billion U.S. grocery business.

The world's biggest online retailer has discussed selling ready-to-eat dishes such as beef stew and a vegetable frittata as soon as next year, officials at the startup firm marketing the technology told Reuters.

The dishes would be easy to stockpile and ship because they do not require refrigeration and could be offered quite cheaply compared with take-out from a restaurant.

If the cutting-edge food technology comes to fruition, and Amazon implements it on a large scale, it would be a major step forward for the company as it looks to grab hold of more grocery customers shifting toward quick and easy meal options at home.

MREs are awesome. But unless you move your ass like soldiers in field training, you'll be loaded down coz it's "no-shit" preparation.

Back in high school, the army sent new recruits to tell us all about how great basic training was, to convince us to sign up. Two things I remember the army guys bragged about: exhaustion and constipation. The recruits said they had been shown video of themselves celebrating after they finished their training, and somehow they were happy to see themselves half dead on video. They said they hadn't "pooped" for a week, and that was somehow supposed to be a good thing. What they neglected to mention was they were being fed a low residue diet exactly like dogs.

So yeah, if you want to be fed like a dog and worked to death like you joined a slave labor cult, join the army. Because that's what the army is. A cult.

Here's the thing. Beyond the obvious political mismanagement of the military, the world is in fact not a safe place and the military is needed for those times when the batshit get a bug up their ass.

Those people in the military deserve respect for being willing to stand between us at risk of their own deaths, and any external threat who wishes us harm. The more so as the job isn't easy - exhaustion and lousy food being only two of many challenges they face and overcome. Some of which are much more problematic, such as the consequences of political malfuckery, such as putting them between us and things that are not threats to us, but are very dangerous to the military (Iraq and Afghanistan wars, etc.)

Fed like a dog? I'd rather eat US Army "chow" than the fast food garbage that is slowly killing civilians. Worked to death? That's not the point those recruiters were trying to show you. The US Army being a cult? Maybe. But there are so many kinds of cults i think you'd have to be more specific. A cult centered around the idea of slave labor being a good thing? That would be no. A cult centered around not pooping? lol, that would also be no.
