U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said on Thursday he has sent recommendations from his review of more than two dozen national monuments to President Donald Trump, indicating that some could be scaled back to allow for more hunting and fishing and economic development.

The recommendations follow a 120-day study of 27 national monuments across the country, created by presidents since 1996, that Trump ordered in April as part of his broader effort to increase development on federal lands.

The review has cheered energy, mining, ranching and timber advocates but has drawn widespread criticism and threats of lawsuits from conservation groups and the outdoor recreation industry.

There were fears that Zinke would recommend the outright elimination of some of the monuments on the list, but on Thursday, speaking to the Associated Press in Billings, Montana, he said he will not recommend eliminating any.

Zinke said in a statement that the recommendations would "provide a much needed change for the local communities who border and rely on these lands for hunting and fishing, economic development, traditional uses, and recreation." He did not specify which monuments he plans to recommend be scaled back.

The Associated Press reported that Zinke said he would recommend changing the boundaries for a "handful" of sites.

If you're taking millions of acres off the table for one site, you fail at knowing the definition of a monument.

I never knew meds could change a person's ideological leanings. MDC must be an experimental test case, once Trump becomes actual emperor expect such meds to be mandated for all citizens.

Clue: it isn't about needing that wood, it is about wanting the profits from selling it. We actually have a surplus of housing, but due to private ownership it can not be allocated as needed. We have sustainable logging companies, but that eats into profits. Easier to log an existing forest with really big trees.

Also absolutely necessary to prevent out of control wildfires. When you put naturally occurring fires out, you fuck up nature's forest cleaning system. Either replace it with some logging or don't bitch when insane undergrowth and fallen timber cause entire states worth of forest to burn.

There is some evil CEO level rationale right there.

Also, this is one good example of why you should pursue actual education, it exposes you to a larger set of ideas than you are likely to encounter on your own. In this case you are operating on outdated ideas that turn out to be wrong Why Thinning Forests is a Poor Wildfire Strategy [thewildlifenews.com]

Read. Their shit is sadly unsupported and not even logically connected. Example: if you've never put out fires in an area, there is no fuel build-up to discuss and the fires just go out on their own. Yet they cite these instances as proof that thinning is not needed where you are putting out fires.

Yes, just plain true by definition! No need to even look at any studies of reality! Coder from Oklahoma knows all about forests and fires. Amazing. I am starting to understand the TMB's thinking, and how this might apply to other things. "Spam mod was given to aristarchus, therefore it must have been justified, because it was aristarchus." Self-evident, no?

Nope. It was justified because you did in fact spam the same comment to multiple articles. There isn't any special exemption from the definition of spam based on who you are. If that's the kind of treatment you're looking for, I suggest a discussion site that isn't this one.

Nope, not true! Did not! The same comment to multiple articles was an act of free speech! I was not selling anything. I was not really seeking to shut down SoylentNews, in fact I was seeking to engender exactly the kind of debate we are having now. Why were not the Spam mod on me immediately rescinded? Some, if not all, I have no way of knowing, were. Is it only my support by fellow Soylentils that got me out of the karma hell? Ah, transparency, and democracy, and free speech! Or, The Mighty Buzzard's opinion on what constitutes actual spam. We all can see where this leads! Sulla! Time to march on Rome, again! Not going to fix anything, but, damn! It's like Gordon Lightfoot's song about Detroit: "And then the tanks go rolling in, to patch things up as best they can." Admit it, you Bird of Carrion, you are on the wrong side this time.

Posting the same comment multiple times is spam. Whether you think you're protesting something or trying to make people safer because they use your hosts file does not matter. You knew this when you posted them.

And I'm happy to keep saying it as many times as you feel the need to whine about utterly justified moderations.

Yep. Look up "Black Saturday Bushfire" for how bad it can be. Flames over 100 metres high, updrafts so strong the turbulance was creating lightning in the smoke clouds.
Fire fronts advancing at 80 to 100 km/h. Radiant heat killing people hundreds of metres away from the fire.

It was estimated that the amount of energy released during the firestorm in the Kinglake-Marysville area was equivalent to the amount of energy that would be released by 1,500 Hiroshima-sized atomic bombs.
