Are carbs the new fat? For much of the second half of the 20th century, doctors constantly suggested we avoid high-fat foods, but more recently a new target for our dietary scorn has emerged: carbohydrates. Two new companion studies are suggesting a ketogenic diet – high fat, low protein, and low carbohydrates – could enhance memory, improve physical strength and extend lifespan.

Whether you want to call it the Atkin's Diet, Paleo or simply "Keto," there have been plenty of variations on this way of eating. While some diets suggest no carbohydrates or sugars, many are underwritten by the same theory. The idea is that by severely restricting the body's intake of carbohydrates, a state known as ketosis is entered into. This forces the body to burn stored fats as fuel instead of carbohydrates.

Has a ketogenic diet worked for you?

Cyclical Keto for eight years this fall.

I eat carbs on weekends and sometimes during the week. My mind is foggy during these phases, not as sharp. I don't know how else to describe it. I am also moodier and more impulsive during those times.

I run a couple of miles a day, but cardio is inefficient. I make slow gains in the gym. Repped 315 twice early this summer, flat bench. That's a new personal best.

Lots of good food you can have on keto. Very high protein mostly. Tuna, chicken, etc. Even tom yum goong.

AC because I don't visit SN much any more and don't care about karma. Stopped paying two years ago. Its a pissing contest and judging from the low double digit comments on most threads, it seems that the Slashdot style moderation system ran everybody off. Get rid of moderation so that we can have actual discussion instead of a small few posting for karma points and never replying.

Inefficient at what? Weight loss or general health?

It's the high volume of AC posting that is killing SN, not the moderation.
There's no way to have a discussion with a herd of ACs.

What i want to know is who the hell is the guy who keeps frosty-pissing up every--single--thread--with that GNAA-caliber snowclone, and what kind of no-life basement-dwelling hot-pocket-snarfing hikki would devote himself--this HAS to be a guy!--to something so pointless? It's not even trolling.

No, it's summer. SN's crowd tends to be older with families who like to go places and do things in the summer.

        The community is stable.
