Order a Lyft in San Francisco and you may soon be able to catch a ride in a self-driving car. The ride-hailing company said Thursday it's partnered with autonomous vehicle software company Drive.ai to bring self-driving cars to the city's streets.

"Pilot programs like this are vital to build public awareness and familiarity with autonomous vehicle technology," Sameep Tandon, CEO of Drive.ai, said in a statement. "Together, we can take the next step in autonomous vehicles, from testing to deployment in real, urban environments."

Is San Francisco, with its many public transit options, the right place for this, or would LA make more sense?

Is it just me or are these fad-VC-landrush things getting faster and less successful all the time?

The amount of hype now surrounding "self driving cars" is so great that it makes me doubt things will pan out. More hype seems to be a good indicator of future failure; at this point every company on the map is starting a "self driving car" division. Many of them will fail for sure, it's just a question of how many.

That isn't to say that self driving cars won't ever work, I am not sure about that. It just looks like the subject is headed quickly for a "market crash" where the hype dies and everyone and their brother who started a self driving car program runs out of cash.

I like to think of it as well-deserved Darwin awards for the excessively haughty sanctimony pricks.
