It's 2017. Why are there still Nazis?
It's a question many observers are asking after hundreds of white supremacists, many displaying swastikas and Confederate battle flags and shouting racist, anti-Semitic, and anti-communist slogans, took to the streets of Charlottesville, Va., this weekend, provoking violence that claimed the life of one counter-protester and resulted in multiple injuries.
The continued existence of people who hold openly white supremacist ideologies more than seven decades after the fall of the Third Reich can be explained, in part, through a social theory developed in the early 1990s. Social dominance theory seeks to explain how hierarchy-enhancing ideologies do not just drive social inequality, but are also a result of it. It suggests that a single personality trait, called social dominance orientation (SDO), strongly predicts a person's political and social views, from foreign policy and criminal justice to civil rights and the environment. What's more, it offers insight into how ideologies such as racism, sexism, and xenophobia tend to arise from the unequal distribution of a society's resources.
"Social dominance theory provides a yardstick for measuring social and political ideologies," says Felicia Pratto, who developed the theory with fellow psychologist Jim Sidanius. "SDO is one way – not the only one – to try to figure out what those ideologies are 'about.'"

It's certain that Stalin was worse than Hitler. (also worse than Hitler: Pol Pot, Mao, Saddam, Idi Amin, Kim...) It's certain that Hitler did some great things for Germany, at least prior to that mistake with Poland. I'm not so sure this rises to the level of "good", but yeah he wasn't the Great Satan he's made out to be.
I think the real horror of WWII is that all the major players should have been allies against the growing horror of Islam. We had a chance. Germans and Japanese and Americans and Russians should have been working together to wipe out the primary existential threat to civilization.
Bummer. Civilization has been nice.

Pre-war Nazis didn't want to exterminate anyone, they wanted all peoples to have a nation of their own, and to compete in their unique and diverse ways for greatness. Each people would naturally consider their own nation preferable to any others. During the war Hitler wanted to expel non-Germans. Jews were to be set up in the island paradise of Madagascar. When the allied bombing disrupted supply lines the existing Typhus epidemic went wild (Zyklon-B was used to prevent the spread of the deadly lice). No alleged death camps have ever been discovered, all investigated have turned out to be work camps.
The victors tell the history. Every historian knows this; Only fools imagine this didn't happen with WWII. Guess what? Nazis lost. That means they've been made into the most ridiculous cartoon villains imaginable. I guess next you'll tell me that Saint Peter walked into the forest, found some barbarians, and founded St. Petersburg; Those barbarians built a city adorned with Roman columns polished mirror smooth and the Christian Saint Peter commissioned pagan Roman Gods and Goddesses to adorn all the buildings. St. Peter sacked an existing Roman city and claimed it for The Church, erasing part of our culture & history in the process. Sometimes things are added instead, Such as death camps. Or the voluntary conversion of Norsemen. Unless you believe that Anglo-Saxon missionary Saint Boniface and a small group of his servants (not a war party) came upon Odin's Oak, and when St. Boniface felled the great tree all by himself without any resistance from the pagans who's sacred tree it was, they were so impressed they all converted to Christianity on the spot.
