Think it was impressive when a Tesla club drove a Model S nearly 670 miles? It has nothing on what Proterra just managed. The startup just drove a Catalyst E2 Max electric bus a whopping 1,101.2 miles on a single charge. That's the furthest any EV has managed before recharging, and well past the 1,013.8 miles driven by the previous record-holder, a one-seat experimental car nicknamed "Boozer." It's not hard to see how Proterra managed the feat when you know about the technology, but this still bodes well for eco-friendly public transportation.

    > It's a *BUS*. You load a semi-tractor with a trailer full of charged batteries, and it could probably do 20-30 thousand miles.

Irrelevant. You could also put pontoons on the truck, add a sail, and get unlimited range...

It's a WORKING bus. It has a payload and can operate. Sure, you won't get a 1000 miles in normal operation with passengers, but my bus as a kid had a ten-mile route. You can probably cover that, fully loaded, twice an hour from 06:00 to 22:00, for two days.
It's a practical solution, which will work for most mid-size cities. Try to live in the practical world.

Yeah OK hotshot but what if my daily commute is 1102 miles? This bus is a COMPLETE joke.

Yea but if mine is less than that it is just an incomplete joke!

my bus as a kid had a ten-mile route.

Yes, I think from tip to tip in Manhattan it's about 15 miles. There are a couple bus routes that go that far, but nobody rides them all the way. You'd be crazy to, because it would take you 2.5 hours with traffic and stops. So an EV bus would make perfect sense and save the city a ton in fuel and maintenance costs.

As a sidenote, people who commute by car into the city on the Long Island Expressway come in from Nassau County 20-25 miles away. Even EVs with less range like the Leaf can handle that distance easily without needing to recharge in Manhattan during the day.

The distances in urban commutes are not great, and well within the range of EV and battery capabilities today.

And my point is that they've *been* in range for a very long time now.
