CBS premiered its new Star Trek series "Discovery" on Sunday. The first episode was made available on OTA (over-the-air) CBS stations — but it and all subsequent episodes are available strictly on CBS's All Access streaming service. Cost is $6/month with ads, $10/month ad-free. (NOTE: The second episode was made available immediately after episode 1 aired. Episodes 3-7 will be released weekly, there will be a break, and then the remaining episodes will again be released weekly early in 2018.)
Ars Technica has a review that mostly praised the new show. (There were at least two technical inaccuracies in the review concerning the first episode.)
For those who may not yet have seen it, I kindly ask folks who comment on this story to make liberal use of the <spoiler>don't show this unless they click here</spoiler> tags.
What did you think? Was it entertaining? Did it hold closely [enough] to existing Star Trek canon? Was any 'ideology' change you saw sufficiently warranted?

Given predictable Hollywood politics, I assume their costume has a thinly disguised MAGA-hat, not somewhat more realistic Antifa masks or Islamic State uniforms. I bet their leader tweets shitposts at 4am to get the other Klingons all riled up?
Better or worse than Pierson's Puppeteers? I thought they were well written, or at least incredibly creative and enjoyable to read. Given that writing is not a strong suit of TV/Hollywood, the STD (what an awesome acronym) implementation of imaginary civilization based on cowardice as a virtue, probably isn't good. Of course it might be too early to tell. A ringworld mini-series doesn't have to be 24x7 Rishathra furry pr0n, there's interesting stuff in that universe that has nothing to do with sex with dolphins or whatever. Those who haven't read ringworld stuff are probably WTFing right now, but its not as bad as it sounds... mostly. Although thats not very creative, at least its more creative than most TV.

We only got a few lines, not enough to get a real picture of their supposed civilization. But we did get the ridiculous fact that there are no food chains on his planet -- everything is either predator or prey. So unlike the herbivorous Puppeteers, he must photosynthesize or something.
Well... technically, I guess you're right, it doesn't have to be. But I can't begin to imagine the torrent of protest over the unfaithfulness of the adaptation if it isn't at least, say, 12x7, with extra rish on Sunday.
