CBS premiered its new Star Trek series "Discovery" on Sunday. The first episode was made available on OTA (over-the-air) CBS stations — but it and all subsequent episodes are available strictly on CBS's All Access streaming service. Cost is $6/month with ads, $10/month ad-free. (NOTE: The second episode was made available immediately after episode 1 aired. Episodes 3-7 will be released weekly, there will be a break, and then the remaining episodes will again be released weekly early in 2018.)

Ars Technica has a review that mostly praised the new show. (There were at least two technical inaccuracies in the review concerning the first episode.)

For those who may not yet have seen it, I kindly ask folks who comment on this story to make liberal use of the <spoiler>don't show this unless they click here</spoiler> tags.

What did you think? Was it entertaining? Did it hold closely [enough] to existing Star Trek canon? Was any 'ideology' change you saw sufficiently warranted?

Oh yes, new Star Trek series is totally a political story! Since VLM didn't even watch it his rant is just that, a rant. I didn't realize that trying to expose the general public to the concept of diversity was such a sin. Only white male heroes from now on! Minorities will be the grunts!

TOS was incredibly ground breaking and pro-diversity. A black WOMAN with a decent role?? ZOMG!!! Guess you're too buried under propaganda and too sensitived to over-zealous "diversity" trends that threaten "yer jerbs" to comprehend that Trek has always been a progressive and hopeful universe. I think the main problem that you conservative types have is that you have blown the diversity trend completely out of proportion while sticking your collective heads up yer butts about the actual problems with bigotry.

I think you'll find nobody is arguing against the concept of "diversity", but rather that entertainment should be less about preaching and more about entertaining. Shows like this are usually terrible, not because of their espousal of left-wing political ideals, but their elevation of them over things like good storytelling and a plot that doesn't talk down to the audience.

The political right embraces real diversity. Businesses and commerce are good examples of this. Businesses don't give a damn what your physical attributes are, as long as you're capable of getting the job done. What emerges is a strong, cohesive group of very different people coming together for the greater good.

The political left embraces forced, artificial diversity. They demand diversity to be injected in all situations, even when doing this is nonsensical or even harmful. They care more about meeting vague quotas than they do about ensuring jobs are done by the most skilled individual available.

It's the political left that's constantly categorizing people by their race, gender, sexual preference, and other attributes, promoting division and strife between these divisions they've created. The political right, on the other hand, is about bringing people together, rather than dividing them.

You are right, just as long as you don't tell that group of strong, cohesive very different people to make a cake for a same-sex wedding.

Wow, I almost want to copy this so I can show people and help them understand just how delusional many conservatives are. You live in a bubble apparently, one that is disconnected from the average reality across the US. The historical record is quite clear, and the GOP has demonstrated their priorities for over 40 years! It is too big of an argument, the best I can do hear is point out that you're delusional. As usual there is some bit of truth to the delusion, anecdotes that can make you believe it is true, but when you view the statistics of reality it is just wrong.

Well TOS was all about liberal ideals, but I guess you glossed over those bits because "cool space TV!"

Talking down to the audience only occurs when the audience thinks women should stick to their traditional roles as home makers and minorities should be doing the grunt work instead of something as important as president.

I think you'll find a TON of people arguing against the concept of diversity and every attempt to embrace it. Since it is observable on a near daily basis on this very same site you must be willfully ignorant or a total sucker. "I have a good friend who is a minority!" lolol

Believe me, it's very disrespectful and very disloyal! Players not doing their jobs. And it's costing the owners a lot of money. Big league. NFL attendance and ratings are WAY DOWN. Boring games yes, but many stay away because they love our country. Boycott NFL & NBA! 🇺🇸

Haha, so you disagree with how VLM was modded down but my "perfectly valid opinion" gets downmodded due to its "attacking" nature. Yup, not hypocrites at all! Mind you I'm not bothered when my attacks on stupidity are modded troll/flamebait, its generally an accurate modding just as some find it insightful. I could be more polite to avoid the troll/flamebait mods but I'd probably still get downmodded. Hypocrites, but nothing new there!
