The Brazilian government backed off a controversial proposal to authorize private companies to mine a sprawling Amazon reserve Monday after blistering domestic and international criticism.

President Michel Temer's office will issue a new decree Tuesday that "restores the conditions of the area, according to the document that instituted the reserve in 1984," the Ministry of Mines and Energy said in a statement.

Last week, environmental activist group Greenpeace said at least 14 illegal mines and eight clandestine landing strips were already being used by miners in the Denmark-sized reserve known as Renca in the eastern Amazon.

Greenpeace said this showed the risks faced by Renca even without Temer's earlier proposal for ending a ban on large-scale foreign mining in the mineral-rich region.

Temer's decree signed on August 25 on opening up Renca—rich in gold, manganese, iron and copper—was suspended days later after an international outcry.

Mining condoned by the government will not happen, but illegal mining will continue?

There was some sort of massive disruption yesterday that affected both Slashdot [twitter.com] and SourceForge [twitter.com]. The problems must have been fixed at some point, because at least Slashdot was working again as of about an hour ago. But since then both Slashdot and SourceForge appear to have gone offline again! Slashdot just came back online, but now the top story being displayed is from yesterday! It's like the subsequent stories since yesterday's outage were resolved are no longer showing! I think that something fucked is happening at Slashdot and SourceForge! Does anyone know what the hell is going on?

Perhaps. I'm wondering if those sites are in their death throes. I've been having problems on and off with the old site. For a while the stylesheet wasn't loading when I went to view comments partisan screeching. Seems there are still somehow quite a few people there.

Disagree. Doing so it's a useless CO2 emission.
Luckily, the Brazilian's decision will allow a good chunk of the Amazon jungle to continue scrubbing that CO2.

You people are fucking naive about Brazil. All of the evidence suggests it's a corrupt, rotten place. For all we know they'll wait a week until the lefty sorts forget all about Brazil, and then they'll resume whatever the fuck it is that they're doing (I don't care enough to actually read the summary to find out).

There should be a general breaking-news submission pinned to the top at all times, where stuff like this can be discussed. The first level of comments would be sorted by descending by default, so that the latest discussion appears at the top.

Maybe the submission/queue approach works well for bland stories, where a delay of 2 or 3 days doesn't matter, but when it comes to important breaking news we shouldn't have to wait for the editors to get their shit together. We should be able to discuss breaking news right away.

    1) Slashdot is for audiences, so don't really care
    2) Sourceforge has been dead for years.

Can we get an article or something for this AC to post in? Otherwise we're going to hear them hyperventilate with offtopic comments till the sites comes back up for this person.

For the record, illegal mining in Brazil is worth discussion when they're massacring uncontacted tribes in the Amazon [news.com.au].

Of course the overall story is about mining because of money being more important than people, but the real story here are these criminals boasting of what amounts to genocide. People that don't what a camera is being terrified trying to defend themselves with sticks while an entire tribe, men, women, and children, killed with guns. Is the government of Brazil doing jack shit to stop them? Apparently not, and their president was about to get away with giving the corps (read: rich men) unfettered access to protected lands.

Yeah, all things considered, I don't give a fuck about Slashdot and Sourceforge.
