Twitter will allow some users to post up to 280 characters in a single tweet:

Twitter is experimenting with doubling the number of characters users can include in a single tweet, the company announced on Tuesday.

Some users will be able to write messages with 280 characters, double the normal 140-character limit, as the social media site considers whether to launch the feature more widely.

"This is a small change, but a big move for us. 140 was an arbitrary choice based on the 160 character SMS limit. Proud of how thoughtful the team has been in solving a real problem people have when trying to tweet. And at the same time maintaining our brevity, speed, and essence!" Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey wrote in a single tweet — something that would have been impossible before the limit was doubled to 280.

The change should benefit ASCII/Latin-1 users the most:

Character limit is a source of frustration for people tweeting in English, but not, for example, in Japanese, Twitter said. The company said its research shows that 9 percent of all tweets in English hit 140 characters, while only 0.4 percent in Japanese reach the maximum.

Is Twitter throwing things at the wall to try to avoid becoming the next Myspace?

Twitter has been struggling to invigorate user growth and advertising revenue while investors are questioning whether the San Francisco-based company can find a long-term growth path. Twitter reported 328 million active monthly users in the second quarter, unchanged from the previous period. Shares have declined 15 percent in the two months since then, closing at $16.59 Tuesday in New York.

It was already possible for tweets to go over the limit due to the way URLs are counted, and @replies not being counted towards the character limit.

I didn't think Trump could be more of an asshole, but apparently it will soon be twice as much.

    you are absolutely right!
I much preferred it when secret deals were done behind closed doors of government, and we would only ever see nicely whitewashed sound bites to keep the serfs dumb and happy.
Its just terrible to have someone who openly tells us what they are actually thinking so we can make actual judgements on what we think about that. Terrible.

I much preferred it when Presidents released their tax returns, didn't violate the records keeping acts, and didn't have metric fucktons of conflict-of-interest. It was truly terrible to have Presidents that are self-indulgent and spending ~100 million dollars of tax payer money for his getaway weekends to his own businesses. Terrible.

This has been a thing for a while, edIII. "Violating records keeping acts?" Bush & Cheney. "Metric fucktons of conflict-of-interest?" Clinton and W are two off the top of my head. Cheney started a war to funnel billions of dollars into his company, Halliburton. American government (and could well be all governments everywhere) is a circle-jerk with the Masters of the Universe.

That it is not surprising or new does not make it acceptable, and we need to put our heads together to design a new form of self-government that breaks that cycle of corruption and influence peddling.

Yeah, Trump is different. You don't need to tell me about Halliburton and Cheney, I know more than you about that. It wasn't just them either, but that fucker that started Blackwater mercenaries that massacred innocent Iraqi citizens because those mercs were scared pussies. As for Clinton, it's merely suspected through her foundations. I find it very, very, suspicious too.

Why is Trump different? That Orange Anus refuses to sit in the fucking White House for more than then a week before his self indulgent visits to his own damn resort. Who is paying for that? Who is paying for the extra security? Who is paying for Air Force One? Who paid to shuttle his shitty fucking children of the corn to the Middle East for business? You realize we pay for his extra scoop of ice cream on his wonderful chocolate cake?

At the current rate, Trump will have spent over a billion by the time he is done with office, and that billion is going straight into his pockets. Unlike previous administrations, their Ethics chief didn't resign calling the current administration a kleptocracy. That doesn't even include the $200k per membership bullshit in his clubs, which conveniently allows you access to the resort, where we are conveniently putting the Orange Anus within feet of his memberships. Do we really need to shuttle his fucking ass down to Florida 4 times per month on our dime? So that he can sit with the people bribing him and have conversations? No wonder he's the President that's going to get rid of the leaks! He has the most to lose.

Jimmy Carter gave up a fucking potato farm dude, but this fuck refuses to let go of his businesses for one second. That's FLAGRANT conflict of interest that is actually illegal. The foreign emoluments clause is being walked all over right now because the Repugnicans refuse to impeach him, and the rest in Congress lack the votes to do it.

Trump is every previous administration on steroids when it comes to fucking over the people. It hasn't been this bad for awhile. Little less than a year.

I meant Bill Clinton selling influence out of the Whitehouse, not Hillary Clinton because she wasn't president. Not that she didn't break laws as Secretary of State.

Bush Sr. was always jetting off to Kennebunkport. W. was always going to Crawford. Bill Clinton was always sponging off the people he was selling influence to (his triangulation strategy).

As to fucking over the people, I dunno, that is debatable. Bill Clinton mega fucked over the people of America with NAFTA. Trump un-fucked the people of America by torpedoing the TPP. W. fucked over the American people with Iraq. Jury's still out on whether Trump will have his own war, but if it turns out to be with North Korea then I'd kind of have to say Kim Jong-un has been begging to get clobbered.

I get that you're upset with the conflicts of interest and breaking of laws in American government. It is upsetting. Then, we passed that line more egregiously a long time ago. The American government tortures people. It commits crimes against humanity as a matter of policy. We shot Nazis and Japanese for doing that in WWII. The American people has put the best police states of the Communist Bloc to shame with its criminal and unconstitutional NSA spying programs. Not one single person has even been called a harsh name by anyone in the federal government.

IOW the train has gone off the rails and what we're watching with Trump and the reaction to him is the endless line of cars piling up behind. Let's not pretend that it's all Trump's fault, because it's not even remotely true. The guy hasn't even been there a year, and could not possibly have created the giant pile of clusterfuck that is the American government of, by, and for the 1%.
