from the we're-not-out-to-get-you dept.

I'm about to move and at my new address I'd like to start out more secured against my ISP and doxers/stalkers. Basically I think I should use a VPN/VPS for personal related traffic (email, shopping), another VPN/VPS for online communities, and then regular net access for random browsing (is all that overkill?). There's been articles in the past about VPN providers (feel free to recommend someone), but there's less about how to configure your network and computer to use them. I'd prefer to be able to use all three at once, but I've heard most people recommend configuring their routers to a single VPN to prevent leakage. But then one company could be logging all your traffic again or it would be easy to forget to switch to/from the VPNs. Is that necessary? Is there Linux-based software which completely restricts applications to certain networks or is that something I should manually setup through iptables and /etc network scripts? My primary OS is LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) and my current router runs DD-WRT, though that might change with the new ISP.

In summary, what's a good strategy to keep the different parts of your online life segregated from each other other than simply using different user names?

Thanks for your insights.

This website has a good list and compare them with objectives criterias

Not sure how updated it is, but it gives a good starting point to find the right VPN for you.

Its interesting to compare any random VBN recommended site to what ThatOnePrivacySite thinks about it.

For instance, if a VPN service operates as business, they get bad marks from TOPS in those columns. Apparently every VPN should provide this service for free regardless of the bandwidth costs they incur.

This site https://www.bestvpn.com/most-secure-vpn/ [bestvpn.com] makes a handful of recommendations. Comparing those to TOPS you get a different perspective (more expensive is not better).

The real problem here is any jackass (with or withoug) a journalism degree fancies themselves and expert on VPNs after comparing a few web sites and prices. Then the write an article (such as the one I posted) and we are left to guess about their motives or compensation.

TOPS also supplies there data in spreadsheet form.

I might add that reading VPN recommendation sites can be tricky, because VPN is a cutthroat business, and the providers frequently pay these sites for good reviews. One litmus test for the reviewers is to see what they have to say about the provider "Hide my ass". This provider is based in the UK and by their laws have to log the activities of their users and turn it over to law enforcement when requested. They were busted for thiswhen a lulzsec member using their service was doxed. [invisibler.com] Any VPN reviewer who gives this provider glowing reviews should be viewed with suspicion.

My personal recommendation? AirVPN [airvpn.org], because they:

      • are based in Italy (which doesn't require VPNs to log their traffic)
      • are founded by pirates [airvpn.org]
      • are very serious about privacy [airvpn.org]
      • ...to the point that they support VPN over Tor, rather than just Tor over VPN
      • seem very technically competent
      • provide detailed guides for complicated setups, e.g. pfsense [airvpn.org]
      • are one of very few providers that have a free/open source client that runs natively on Linux
      • accept bitcoin & other cryptocurrency
      • are decently priced*

*) 54€ / year, and if you want it cheaper they usually have sales around black friday, Christmas and early June (founding anniversary)

    Well I am late.
This is a good start although is can be quite technical and a bit of over kill.
I settled on Private Internet Access back in Feb 2017 and set others up.
Easy to use, no problem install for Windows 7 with VBox running SolydXK Linux.
And I still 3 more devices that includes Android just haven't bothered as I have a substantial investment in my pc and do not live on my phone, since I have 100/10 Spectrum.
Customer service was great given the time that I got it because the were "swamped", 3 days instead of 1 day to get going.

NOTE: May web sites do not play nice with VPN. But a right click on the tray icon and disconnect, with rebooting or restarting the OS, and you are back to normal.
I also suggest Opera and activate their "free for opera / $ for other browsers add-on".
Do not mix the two concepts up. A browser add-on does not give the end-to-end like a true VPN.
I suggest not putting in a router [WRT no problem] since the nice factor of the web is very lacking since "we are their product".

Of course you can do as you wish and I do not have any connection with any company I recommend, just a builder, programmer, repair tech that care.
