Way to go, New York City! All 1,200 schools in the New York City public school district will now offer a vegan hummus option every day at the beginning of this school year, thanks to The Coalition for Healthy School Food (CHSF), a non-profit that helps introduce plant-based foods into schools. Vegan options for students that are available on the school’s vegetarian menu will range from Mexicali Chili, Lentil Stew, Lentil Sloppy Joes, Braised Black Beans with Plantains, and Zesty BBQ Crunchy Tofu. These yummy meals will be on rotation for the vegetarian menus.

And this isn’t CHSF‘s first initiative to help students have access to fresh, healthy food. CHSF has worked with the city’s department of education to help three NYC schools, Active Learning Elementary School in Queens (PS244), Peck Slip School in Manhattan (PS343), and The Bergen Elementary School (PS1) in Brooklyn, to transition to an all-vegetarian menu.

How can they have any pudding if they don't eat their meat?

Many years ago we hosted a week long retreat for artists north of Ottawa. The decision was made to have a fully vegan menu. We found a fantastic cook, and the food was truly wonderful.

Except that about day five we found we had a camp full of people who seemed to spend far to much time re-creating everyone's most famous "Blazing Saddles" scene. [youtu.be]

If cattle are not a cash crop we'll probably end up eradicating them. I'm vegetarian because I never liked eating meat and cannot stand the smell of dead flesh or the thought of eating it. I recognise the right of others to do so and know necessary developmental protein requires supplements without meat and dairy products. Protein is required for healthy brain (IQ) and muscle development in humans. It does seem the far left are intent on retarding human beings and making it so unprofitable to rear cattle that the only place our grandchildren will see them is in the zoo, on the endangered species list. Unintended consequences indeed!

Your trolling is weak. Protein exists plentifully in several edible plants.

There are, however, some amino acids that are _very difficult_ to get without eating meat. Vegans require an extremely carefully planned diet, and I can't see how the schools can easily work into this, not on budgetary or time constraint reasons.

I'm also curious what percentage of students in NYC are vegans, for this to even be considered as a city-wide option. Most likely, I suspect, some politically connected person (perhaps a former superintendent?) has recently started a vegan food service business.

Going Vegan is a really smart idea for school lunches:

          • Kosher? Check
          • Halal? Check
          • Hindu? Check
          • Lactose-intolerant? Check
          • Lower cost? Check
          • SJW? Check
          • Given that kids are only eating 5 meals per week at school (out of ideally 21 meals per week), there are plenty of options for the home to include meat and dairy into their diet to ensure that they get other nutrients.

They actually already have cattle at the zoo: the gaur. You can see them at the Bronx Zoo on the monorail ride, right after the enclosure of mongolian horses.

Except that brain is not made of protein - it's made of fat. So your statement is mostly false. And if you eat meat once a week (like a can of fish size, not 2lb steak), you get more than enough.

In the "good old days" people ate meat on the weekends, if that. And I don't think they were any stupider than they are today. The main difference is they weren't fat.
