Bath Spa University is conducting an internal inquiry into claims that it turned down an application for research on gender reassignment reversal because it was "potentially politically incorrect" and would attract criticism on social media.

James Caspian, a psychotherapist who specialises in working with transgender people, proposed the research about "detransitioning" to the university in south-west England, which, he said, initially approved the application.

When he went back with his preliminary findings that suggested growing numbers of young people, particularly women, were regretting gender reassignment, Bath Spa said his proposal would have to be resubmitted to the ethics committee, which rejected it.

Caspian, who enrolled on an MA course at the university, said he was "astonished" by the decision and had sought legal advice.

"The fundamental reason given was that it might cause criticism of the research on social media, and criticism of the research would be criticism of the university. They also added it's better not to offend people," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Monday.

I was going to add some snark here but they pretty well covered making a mockery of academia for me.

Why again do we sexually mutilate the mentally ill?

And why do we also let them post on SN?
Given the fact that the person who undergoes such an operation made the choice themselves, "we" have nothing to do with it. Furthermore, liberties are part of any decent modern society. Those liberties include the right for a person to decide for themselves that they want a sex change operation. It might not be the right choice but it their choice to make. Don't like it? Too bad. Go live somewhere where else. Freedom hater.

The operative words were mentally ill. Stepping around the argument that people who decide to slice and dice their genitals to approximate the opposite sex are mentally ill, we restrict those diagnosed mentally ill from a lot of things. We sometimes even confine them against their will.

Willful denial of brain imaging studies and evidence that gender is present even in the crib should quality as mentally ill.

You honestly believe there is no difference between men and women? Come on, don't we have some people who post here who love to say that men and women are different? Back me up here! Men and women are different, right?

Oh, btw, let me up the stakes. I happen to suddenly believe that life begins at conception. Therefore, I think that women who want abortions are murderers. We should outlaw abortion (thus controlling womens' bodies and forcing them to provide life support to another person against their will). Yes?

I can do worse. I suddenly think breast cancer is a trivial disease. I also have suddenly realized that Susan G. Komen is a money laundering organization and should be shut down. Access to mammograms should be dependent on health insurance like everything else. And I'm saying that during a feminist holy month!

Birth control. That's a hormonal medication that causes health problems for women. We shouldn't be pushing the pill on women. Women should get married if they want to have sex.

Amazing the thoughts that suddenly occur to me when confronted with a feminist like you!

You wanna do this thing? I have a patriarchy on this side I've suddenly taken—an army of old men making decisions about women's bodies. What do you have? That selfsame patriarchy? How's that going to work out for you?

Where did I say that? Of course they are different. If they weren't, there would be no desire for some to take their junk to the local butcher.

Huh? Non-sequitor. And there are a lot of people who believe that to be true anyway.

Since there is a high mortality from untreated breast cancer, that can be objectively shown to be untrue. And again, non-sequitor.

So are you saying that there is evidence that women on birth control are mentally ill? And I fail to see what that has to do with anyone radically mutilating their sex organs with surgery. We were discussing limiting those surgeries on mental illness grounds without making a judgment to the validity of that premise. You are all over the map.

Amazing the thoughts that suddenly occur to me when confronted with a feminist like you!

Oh my God. You are nuts. I have never been accused of that before. Do you know what feminist even means?

Honey, you are talking to the patriarchy. Maybe you need to up your lithium dosage.
