Bath Spa University is conducting an internal inquiry into claims that it turned down an application for research on gender reassignment reversal because it was "potentially politically incorrect" and would attract criticism on social media.

James Caspian, a psychotherapist who specialises in working with transgender people, proposed the research about "detransitioning" to the university in south-west England, which, he said, initially approved the application.

When he went back with his preliminary findings that suggested growing numbers of young people, particularly women, were regretting gender reassignment, Bath Spa said his proposal would have to be resubmitted to the ethics committee, which rejected it.

Caspian, who enrolled on an MA course at the university, said he was "astonished" by the decision and had sought legal advice.

"The fundamental reason given was that it might cause criticism of the research on social media, and criticism of the research would be criticism of the university. They also added it's better not to offend people," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Monday.

I was going to add some snark here but they pretty well covered making a mockery of academia for me.

Because, by all appearances, this treatment seems to fix the illness. Whenever one of you people says "butbutbutbut THEIR MENTAL HEALTH!" I know to immediately write you off. I have nearly a dozen trans friends, some MtF but mostly FtM, and I've watched every single one of them become happier, calmer, and less anxious during and after transition. No, I don't "get" the trans thing, but that just means I have to take their word for it.

If you were truly worried about the mental health of people like them, you would do whatever it took to solve the actual mental health issues. In this case, transitioning does it.

But you're not. No, instead you assume a priori that *being trans* is what makes them mentally ill, and want to use that as an excuse not to...what was it you said, "sexually mutilate" them? Regardless of the fact that this seems to cure the problem in nearly all cases. This is horseshit, and you know it. Your icks do not trump someone else's well-being, even if you don't like what they do in pursuit of it.

Now one of those FtMs I know actually DID de-transition, and wouldn't you know it, it was the specific one who when she told me I blurted out "You? You don't seem like it *at all.*" I guess the ol' intuition is still working then.

    Wrong!

This is presumably why the suicide rate is the same pre and post transition? You can note the source although I don't buy the victim / oppression narrative or think it's helpful. I've known people with clinical anxiety, depression and PTSD; the solution was for them to start taking personal responsibility, never to have them play the eternal victim and blame everyone else.

For the people I know, their transition was the first step. I'm trying to comprehend what it must be like to suffer what they told me, to feel like your own body is a prison and a mistake, and it's not working. I can't understand what that's like. Starting that seems to have allowed them to get out of their own way and deal with the other problems they were having.

Again, I can only take their word for this. But I know Aaron, for example, showed *immediate* improvement once he started his T regimen and cut his hair really short. It was like night and day. It was like seeing someone who'd been sleepwalking wake up. I don't really know how to explain it, but he's more real, more "solid" than before.

Okay, we're done. You obviously know neither any actual trans people nor any of the research, science, and history about them. You're just wasting space and electricity now.

For the record that was a different AC and he may have been trolling but I don't support this notion of trans children at all, they get to decide when they're adults.

As for this fashionable idea of raising children as "gender neutral", any parent that puts their ego needs before the developmental needs of the child is simply a bad parent.

No. Because once you grow up, you will realize you are pandering to a confused group that is really only desperate for attention. Although, it sounds like you might be a charter member too.

No, cupcake, I'm cis, though lesbian :) And with all due respect (which is none in your case), you don't seem to know any of these people or any of the current research on the subject. I was skeptical of them too until reading some of the brain-section work out there, but it looks like they're not faking it or making it up. Experience and knowledge beats a case of the icks. Bye now!

Oh come on. That's a knock-on effect of your bullcrap and you know it.

If we can find a diagnostic test for brain gender, we can prevent that. Well, for trans women at least, but you sound like somebody who doesn't care at all about trans men, so we should be agreed about that, right?

Why are you not interested in a diagnostic for brain gender?
