The European Southern Observatory (ESO) will announce an "unprecedented discovery" on Monday:

ESO will hold a press conference on 16 October 2017 at 16:00 CEST, at its Headquarters in Garching, Germany, to present groundbreaking observations of an astronomical phenomenon that has never been witnessed before.

[...] By registering for the conference, journalists agree to honour an embargo, details of which will be provided after registration, and not to publish or discuss any of the material presented before the start of the conference on 16 October 2017 at 16:00 CEST.

LEAK IT!

Update: The announcement will be related to gravitational waves, and may involve a neutron star collision, which would also be visible using optical methods.

This is a low point, even for SN.

The "tune in next Monday" stuff is awful. Wait until Monday, then run a story. Meanwhile, there is a really good story getting ignored:

      https://soylentnews.org/submit.pl?op=viewsub&subid=22744¬e=&title=How+Kaspersky+AV+was+caught+helping+Russian+hackers+steal+NSA+secrets [soylentnews.org]

That one is a real horror. It's a follow-up to the story we had about Kaspersky being banned from some US government stuff. Probably we knew, but wanted to stop using the software before letting Kaspersky know that we knew about what they did.

It's a massive and devastating spy operation, made far worse by some of our own people putting things on the wrong computers.

Does it make it OK when the topic is a new SciFi "teaser" that is released, or a "XXX Premier This Weekend" story, or "Game of Thrones New Season Kicks Off Saturday" type of story?

Well, we can't run that one, because it sounds like it's against our Narrative. Our Narrative is diametrically to opposed to the Their Narrative. The reasoning goes like this: "she lost! get over it!" Therefore, anything that might make it sound like Russia may have been up to no good constitutes claims of "election hacking." Election hacking claims, as we know, may be summarily dismissed, because voting machines themselves were not hacked. We know that they were not hacked, because if they had been, then she would have won.

I'm almost a 100% supporter of Trump, and mostly wish he were more... Trump-like. Magnify the MAGA. (only a gripe about net neutrality)

Most countries, Russia included, are frenemies. They can be helpful, but watch your back!

Republicans generally have been steady about Russia for almost 3 decades. Back in the 2008 election, democrats mocked Sarah Palin for seeing Russia as a threat. A bit later, our secretary of state Hillary Clinton got out a silly little reset button and declared that Russia would be our friend. (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_reset [wikipedia.org] for picture with button, mistranslated BTW) Not long afterward: Russia invades the Ukraine to take a chunk of territory, there are border violations in the Baltics, we try to delegitimize Putin's reelection, and Russia possibly tries to delegitimize our election as revenge.

We know we have election fraud. Numerous counties in California (about 10 or 15 from what I remember of the map) had more votes than registers voters, and all but one of those went democratic. We had a close senate race that was decided by fewer votes than the number of votes that were proven to have been cast by people who were not eligible; this too went democrat. Broward county in Florida, on the east coast, was the last county and only files results when it was obvious that no reasonable amount of fraud could give the state to Hillary.

Basically, stuff was hacked in favor of Hillary and she still lost. This is why she was so unprepared for the loss; she was sure that there was enough fraud to ensure a win.

Oh, and the DNC emails? That was an inside job. You can thank Seth Rich, angry Bernie supporter, for that one. This is why he was "mugged" resulting in death and nothing of value was taken.

For what it's worth, Palin was never mocked for seeing Russia as a threat. She was mocked because she claimed (or implied) she had foreign policy experience because Alaska is geographically very close to Russia.

Your election fraud claim is entirely unsubstantiated, so if you could substantiate it in any way, there is a crack commission that is looking for ANYTHING to grasp onto. And you Seth Rich line has been thoroughly debunked and revealed as a perpetuated fraud. If you still seriously hold those thoughts, take it as a wake up call to climb out of your bubble to look around.

If I may ask, I wonder what makes you an almost 100% supporter of Trump? He has not held a consistent position on almost any topic over at least the last 5 years or so. His positions change constantly, and that is true even after he was sworn in. I found him an interesting candidate before the RNC because he was touting some pretty taboo Republican positions that I thought . I really thought that he had the potential to really get things done by working with the moderates in both parties because he showed that he could give the middle finger to the tea party and still win primaries. But once it became clear that he was going to get the nomination, he went all-in on the far-right thing and became entirely unacceptable.

The part that I don't understand about his supporters is that Trump clearly doesn't care about what makes it to his desk, just as long as he can sign something and show success. He clearly doesn't care what is in any health bill, he just wants one that he can sign into law. I think "tax reform" will be the same thing. Same with the Gorsuch nomination. Take any other president, especially someone like Reagan, they were constantly working the lawmakers to get things done. Reagan was calling lawmakers, using charm and decency when it worked, horsetraded when he needed, but he was always working for a result. Trump just says "get me a bill" and gripes when they can't. This is where my disconnect is with his supporters. What is it that is appealing to you because he's good at making slogan-like statements, and demanding results, but he doesn't seem to be good at actually leading or even leading by example in any manner.

Interestingly, this is how the US system of government was supposed to work. Back before all the presidential power grabs, Congress wrote the laws and made the decisons. Congress has the power to declare war, make treaties, set budgets, etc. The President was a figurehead for dealing with foreign powers and ceremonial functions, but had very little autocratic power.
Maybe Trump is secretly a strict constitutionalist, and is trying to get Congress to take back the power and responsibility that they should be exercising. If so, expect him to get more and more outrageous until Congress are forced into doing their jobs. Should be fun to watch.
