Malta car bomb kills Panama Papers journalist

The journalist who led the Panama Papers investigation into corruption in Malta was killed on Monday in a car bomb near her home. Daphne Caruana Galizia died on Monday afternoon when her car, a Peugeot 108, was destroyed by a powerful explosive device which blew the vehicle into several pieces and threw the debris into a nearby field.

A blogger whose posts often attracted more readers than the combined circulation of the country's newspapers, Caruana Galizia was recently described by the Politico website as a "one-woman WikiLeaks". Her blogs were a thorn in the side of both the establishment and underworld figures that hold sway in Europe's smallest member state.

Her most recent revelations pointed the finger at Malta's prime minister, Joseph Muscat, and two of his closest aides, connecting offshore companies linked to the three men with the sale of Maltese passports and payments from the government of Azerbaijan.

I don’t think anybody knows it was Russia that planted the bomb. They keep saying "Russia, Russia, Russia," and maybe it was. It could be Russia but it could be China, could also be lots of other people. I think it was Russia, but I think it was probably other people and/or countries, and I see nothing wrong with that statement. Nobody really knows. Nobody really knows for sure.

Stuff like this is what happens if you piss the wrong people off.

We humans have a weird mode, called "agentic", which we can be placed in when we are subordinate. When in this mode, we can do unthinkable things, including murder, if that is what we are ordered to do.

The recinding of the judgements of the Nuremberg trials cemented the belief that people are not to be held accountable for their acts if committed in "agentic" mode. Had those people been held accountable for their acts, it would be likely nearly impossible for any authority to subordinate people sufficiently to carry out orders to murder.

When did they get rescinded? IIRC, there were still a few Nazi hunters still trying to track down the accused up to a few years ago.

What's the Maltese government doing about this murder? Nothing? Declare it a total, unsolvable mystery or pass it off with some pablum, you know, stuff happens, must have been the act of some deranged, unbalanced loner, which happens all the time (see Las Vegas), nothing anyone can do about that. In Malta, do citizens have the right to bear bombs?

Is the US going to invade Malta, and capture and imprison Muscat and his aides?

How about the EU, will they do something?
