Truck rental company Ryder Systems Inc. is adding 125 fully electric vans to its fleet.
The 26-foot vans are made by Chanje Energy Inc., a Los Angeles-based startup. They can haul up to 6,000 pounds and travel around 100 miles on a fully charged battery.
The first vans were delivered in New York Thursday. Ryder will start renting or leasing them to customers in California, Illinois and New York by the end of this year.
Ryder reckons they'll save on maintenance and fuel for the electric vans.

I assume you get to see the condition of the truck before you sign for it. And if you committed to filling up, then why not do it? You're going to pay double otherwise. What they do to their next customer is irrelevant to you.

I've had rental trucks where they wanted it back at the same gas gauge reading -- start at half, return at half.
Problem with filling it up is that truck tanks are often much bigger than car tanks.

I said that already. They might try to do the inspection without you present and ask you to blindly sign an inspection report. ALWAYS inspect for yourself before signing. I've seen them "accidentally" forget to mark off damage meaning they could pin the damage on you on return. NEVER sign anything until you see the truck yourself. It might piss them off but fuck them, it's your right.
Why should I spend money on fuel I don't need? Moreover, they claim the supposed fuel fine is there to recoup their cost to send the truck to be filled. But they don't fill it. Instead they rent it to you with whatever it was returned with in the hopes that you sign off without realizing it. You are now forced to fill the tank to avoid the fine. They still fined the previous customer but pocketed the money. That's fraud. Same thing with cleaning the truck. They claim to fine you $50-75 to clean the truck but they don't clean it. They just pass it off to the next customer, pocket the money and let the customer clean it out.
Trust me, many of these places are ran by scum bags who will try and scam you if you arent aware of their tricks. When we rented trucks for our business we found a little mom and pop Penske rental who were pretty cool. They did the walk around with you and verbally explained what they were marking. The amount of fuel you left with is the amount of fuel you return the truck with. The time you rented the truck was the time you returned it the next day for a true 1 day/24 hour rental. If the box was filthy they marked it off and waived the cleaning penalty as it was given to us like that.
