How can an employer make sure its remote workers aren’t slacking off on the job? In the case of talent management company Crossover, the answer is to take photos of them every 10 minutes through their webcam.

The pictures are taken by Crossover’s productivity tool, WorkSmart, and combined with screenshots of their workstations along with other data including app use and keystrokes to come up with a “focus score” and an “intensity score” that can be used to assess the value of freelancers.

Today’s workplace surveillance software is a digital panopticon that began with email and phone monitoring but now includes keeping track of web-browsing patterns, text messages, screenshots, keystrokes, social media posts, private messaging apps like WhatsApp and even face-to-face interactions with co-workers.

Good luck with that, Big Brother. My webcam's covered by duct tape.

This kind of shit makes it very hard to pull out of a depressive state. I know, the trick is to keep working for a brighter future, but when invasive nasty shit like this is the norm it paralyzes me and makes me feel like not doing a thing. These policies harm society's psyche on a much broader scale.

The solution is not to give a fuck. If a company is doing this, then just give even less of a fuck and leach as much money as possible for their "metrics". There are more important things in life than work, like you know, life.

Not giving a fuck tells everyone else it's normal. Congratulations! You are now part of the problem.

Maybe you have some magical solution to the money problem, but I don't. It isn't always as simple as "find another job". Sometimes there are no similar jobs in the area, sometimes moving is not an option. For many people they NEED their job, and with the economy as sucky as it is right now employers are able to find ever more desperate workers.

Multiple studies have shown that some amount of screwing around is necessary for optimal human efficiency, but the morons in charge more often than not treat employees more like slaves. Since there is a gigantic separation between the top and bottom what really happens is that the shit rolls downhill. Your shitty bosses are probably being shit on by the people above them, until you reach the top where you just have greedy motherfuckers ruining the world for everyone. I feel it is safe to say this is true for the vast majority of employees.

Those in precarious financial dependence on slavedrivers perhaps should refrain from banging out the US standard set of 3 financial boat anchors, who are going to face shitty prospects themselves when they graduate with a $500k degree.
