Chill-proofed divers are about to plunge beneath the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica in an attempt to figure out how global warming is affecting the diverse array of life that hangs out there.

And for the first time, they are recording 360-degree video of the entire six-week expedition to create a virtual-reality experience of the mysterious polar environment above and below the ice.

"The aim of the outreach is to raise awareness about the unique and fragile Antarctic coastal under-ice ecosystems and the broader effect climate change might have on the ecosystems and the whole planet," Alf Norkko, a marine biologist at Helsinki University, said in a statement.

Norkko is one of three Finnish members of the expedition, along with University of Helsinki marine biologist Joanna Norkko, who is also married to Alf Norkko, and the explorer and photographer Patrick Degerman, which set out Thursday (Oct. 26) from Scott Base in Antarctica. In addition to their scientific studies and diving duties beneath the ice shelf, the Finnish team members are responsible for shooting the 360-degree video and keeping the world informed through a series of regular updates, photographs and videos on their Facebook page.

These days, every bit of research is somehow tied to global warming, no matter how absurd the connection. It seems there is the belief, true or not, that you can't get funding without a connection to global warming.

I'm sick of this agenda. I'm getting really disinclined to support funding science. OK scientists, how do you like THAT one, hmmm? You have a good short-term funding strategy going there it seems, but pissing off voters like me isn't going to go well long-term. Half of America hates you.

If you want that half of America to support funding for science, you could instead tie everything to military applications. Or, perhaps, you could just butt out of politics. That would be refreshing.

    Agree.

Nothing these days can just be about facts, there always has to be an agenda. Including science.

And I'm sure they're assuming the result ahead of time here, too. Their goal is to prove an effect, because they know there must be one.

Combine an attitude like that with the typical poor understanding of statistics and you will almost always find what you are looking for. Then you can use that result to further reinforce everyone's existing political belief and further taint future results. And bonus, anyone who even shows a hint of questioning this is a heretic!

That is not a good environment for humans to determine truths.
