Vinay Gupta, one of the main figures behind Ethereum, is having a meltdown. Someone he doesn't like (Gab.ai) was apparently considering using Ethereum for something. Gupta has posted some...interesting tweets. Key quotes:

"[Don't use] Ethereum. We are all communists"

"We will collude against you"

"We do infrastruture. You depend on us. We will find ways. Count on it".

Are these the kinds of things one wants to hear from the people behind a digital currency (and platform) that one is supposed to trust? They will "find ways" to "collude" against anyone they dislike?

Seriously, the more I learn about Ethereum, the less I like it. Full disclosure: I sold what few ETH I owned several months ago, for reasons related to "The DAO" mess.

Let's face it: all currencies are susceptible to such manipulation. Even Bitcoin, which is becoming increasingly controlled by a smaller number of large stakeholders in a way that threatens the statistical assumptions that are supposed to keep validations fair.

It may not be good for Ethereum's adoption, but I praise Gupta for being honest about the power he wields. It's better than staying silent and simply using the power to covertly harm his opponents. Even if he's actually doing both.

Once an open source cryptocurrency has wide enough adoption, presumably if the founders make a change the other users don't like the other users can just fork the project.

I'm following Bitcoin, Ethereum, and others with interest but not investing anything more than a few hours of reading here or there yet. It's all just a form of gambling at the moment. And while I'm kicking myself very hard for not buying Bitcoins back in 2012, I still think it was the right decision with available evidence at the time.
