NewsChina http://www.newschinamag.com/newschina/articleDetail.do?article_id=2719 reports on an Ambitious Plan -- the early development of a new city, about 100 km SW of Beijing that is meant to house science and research companies/universities.

It is a several part feature, other sections are:

> Primary responsibility for planning the Xiongan New Area, a new megacity in Hebei province about 100 kilometers southwest of downtown Beijing, falls on the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design (CAUPD), which sits under the Ministry of Construction.

> A New Model? -- In the six months that have passed since the government announced the ambitious plan to establish the Xiongan New Area 100 kilometers south of Beijing, Rongcheng, one of three counties in Hebei Province neighboring Beijing that are included in the project, has already seen some major changes.

> Locals in Limbo -- Residents in the three counties that will make up Xiongan share their hopes and concerns for the future

Central planning started three days after President Zi Jinpeng proposed it to the Central Committee on March 24, 2016. In June 2017 the initial plan was completed for a 30 Km^2 area, and was opened for global bidding.

The area includes a lake (badly polluted) and fishing villages that will be relocated...not everyone is going to be a winner here.

Submitter here, I agree that it's ugly, and I don't think the editor(s) were able to do much to improve it. If you have a better idea for dealing with a series of related articles, please let us know.

Each link increments the last digit, which goes to the next article in the magazine (I saw it first in the print edition). I did cut off the ends of the original links, so they are shortened as much as possible. There are no continuation links on the individual web pages, nothing like, "Click here for next article". After each link I pasted the lead paragraph (abstract) so SN readers could see the focus of each article.

Since they are planning (and starting to build) a whole city, there are many different aspects to consider.

In answer to another post above, one stated reason to build this new city, 100km from Beijing, is that the whole Beijing area is overflowing, much too crowded and polluted to just keep adding more suburbs. Instead they leaped over some undeveloped areas to an area that could be attractive (once the lake is cleaned up). I think they expect the connecting roads/trains will probably also attract development in the future. In the very long term, it's quite possible that this new city will be like Orange County to LA, an hour or more away from the original city center, but part of the same mega urban area...or the new city may fail to attract the intended audience and fail (or morph into something else).

Maybe next time the links could at least be formatted so a large and unwieldy URL becomes a cute little linky [newschinamag.com]

      Thanks for the submission.
