Microsoft plans to integrate the command line tools tar and curl in the next feature update of Windows 10, out in March 2018.

While we don't know the full name of the next feature update yet, it is clear that it will feature major improvements and additions unlike the rather bleak Fall Creators Update.

Microsoft did mention previously that it plans to publish a major update and later on in the year another update that refines it (see Too many Windows 10 feature updates for an opinion piece on that release strategy).

It is pretty clear though that Microsoft is turning Windows 10 into a jack of all trades system. After adding SSH client and server support in the Fall Creators Update, it now revealed that tar and curl support are coming to Windows 10 as well.

Linux users may shrug their shoulders at this point as the two command line tools have been part of Linux for a long time.

Wow, like, tar and curl...as if I couldn't get those binaries for windows 10 already....if I actually ran Windows 10, that is.
As it stands, the Win 7 and XP boxes have had both these (and loads of other unix commands) for quite.some.time.now.

Hell, back in Win98 days I had tar on the boxes, ok, so no curl but wget.
Hell^^2, back in DOS days I had tar on a number of PCs in the lab that were used to program PALs [wikipedia.org]

I don't know why Microsoft think that in doing all this, somehow, magically, us UNIX/Linux bods will forget all their current and past BS (e.g. why hello there Mr Telemetry!) not just the stuff attached to using the Windows 10 OS family, some of us have long memories, some of us remember with, umm, amusement Microsoft Windows NT Services for UNIX and the attempts, at one place of employ, of the NT team (ex VMSers to a man¹) to foist that particular nonsense upon us Solaris, IRIX and Digital UNIX admins, oh, how we chortled...and then ignored them.

¹ People fail to realise the Linux/Windows Holy War is, in part, actually a continuation of the UNIX/VMS one, meh, I'm in the UNIX/Linux camp I suppose for this fight, but spiritually I'm still in the TOPS-20 one.
