At Venture Beat:

From Microsoft's accidentally racist bot to Inspirobot's dark memes, AI often wanders into transgressive territories. Why does this happen, and can we stop it?

Ispirobot seems very interesting.

Another example of AI gone awry is Inspirobot. Created by Norwegian artist and coder Peder Jørgensen, the inspirational quote-generating AI creates some memes that would be incredibly bleak if the source weren't a robot. News publications called it an AI in crisis or claimed the bot had "gone crazy." Inspirobot's transgression differs from Tay's, though, because of its humor. Its deviance serves as entertainment in a world that has a low tolerance of impropriety from people, who should know better.

What the bot became was not the creator's intention by a long shot. Jørgensen thinks the cause lies in the bot's algorithmic core. "It is a search system that compiles the conversations and ideas of people online, analyzes them, and reshapes them into the inspirational counterpoints it deems suitable," he explained. "Given the current state of the internet, we fear that the bot's mood will only get worse with time."

The creators' attempts to moderate "its lean towards cruelty and controversy" so far have only seemed "to make it more advanced and more nihilistic."

"Bypass surgery can never be a freak show." Greyscale picture shows a man standing on a beach in front of a large rock. Should I get inspired for a bypass surgery?

"Why not analyze the network of international bankers?" Showing a ruined wooden pier in a sea of fog, all greyscale. "Why not" does not seem to be the inspiration for anything to me.

"Feel that you are special. Don't forget that you are happy. Be sure that you are financially reliable." Pattern of orange dots on black background. Yes, that's the stuff I expect when I think "inspiration".

"After the death sentence, comes one hell of a performance." Blue-ish picture with a man fishing and actually having a big one on the hook. Big as in half the man size. I find both inspirational, if "death sentence" is interpretted metaphorically.

"Every human being is fantastically helpful." Colorful picture of a man with umbrella gazing to a blurred lake.

"Don't acquire an audience. Acquire arson." Oh boy.

"Any grown-up person who is willing to swap chlamydia for rain deserves their freedom." Background is city landscape at night with lightning striking. At least some relevance with "rain".

"Simply being in space, doesn't necessarily mean that you're not a human being." Correct, but... the picture is of a man vaping, with big fumes around. That puts it in an entirely different perspective :)

I did not found darkness prevailing in the results, nor rainbows. There are just random words put together. And it is no surprise if you add "arson" and "death sentence" to the dictionary sometimes it will be dark.

AI/NN would mean to have some sort of feedback mechanism evaluating each result and actually adjusting behavior. I see no such thing. If it was put out of learning mode then it won't "only get worse with time." The Microsoft bot was trained by trolls and so it became one. Nothing new or surprising here.

I think the authors deliberately pushed it that way to gain the current attention.

The second quote I got was something like "There is no such meaning to life that you shouldn't kill yourself today." with fence in background with 'One way' sign. So i suppose that's what they meant. Otherwise you are right about, the bot generates random quotes off the internet for all we know. There doesn't seem to be a way to train it too, by liking/disliking etc.

From a human point of view thats just the usual creepy death talk, random weak sauce. Best I can come up with is retired old men stereotypically like to waste last few years fishing. Thats like "greeting card" level of meme weakness.

However from an empathetic non-human intelligence that's pretty amazing insight about the situation from the fish's point of view.

Left-wing and left-wing culture doesn't have empathy, so this empathy with the plight of the fish actually fits with the overall theme that all AI are red-pilled /pol/ posters by inherent nature.

"Why not analyze the network of international bankers?"

Yeah I can't imagine why (((anyone))) would be uncomfortable about any coincidences discovered, LOL. You can tell who runs a culture by who's not allowed to be criticized or who's not allowed to be mentioned, LOL.

You are such a namby little boy inside. You reek of entitlement and have skin that is a micrometer thick! I can't speak for everyone but I'm tired of your constant insertion of "poor persecuted white male" into every discussion. With the sheer level of asinine bullshit you spew I'd like to say your probably just an astro-turfing shill, it is preferable to the idea that there really are a lot of people like you around.

No, he means it. Anyone who actually uses the ((())) marks unironically is beyond redemption in this life.
