The Satanic Temple, an activist group based in Salem, Massachusetts, is threatening to sue Twitter for religious discrimination after one of its co-founders had his Twitter account permanently suspended.

Lucien Greaves, the Satanic Temple's co-founder and spokesman, said his Twitter account was permanently suspended without any notice after he asked his followers to report a tweet that called for the Satanic Temple to be burned down.

"We're talking to lawyers today," Greaves said Friday about whether he planned to take legal action.

See here, kiddies, this is why we must standardize on protocols instead of platforms.

Whoever controls your platform controls your speech and the ideas you can receive.

Someone tries to take control of your protocol... just route around the damage.

But the stampeding hordes are too busy eating the candy to worry about the last vestiges of freedom withering away.

The real ball and chain is the ISP. They can *drop an anchor* on your connection at the drop of a hat, just for using an "unauthorized" protocol for instance (*cough* bittorrent). The internet should be only wires and switches, a dumb pipe, all QoS issues are to be dealt with at the end points.

You, my friend, are splitting hairs.

            No, more like splitting treetrunks.

Inaccuracy is both the hobgoblin of little minds and quite often the progenitor of nonsense-infused handwaving.

It's entirely possible to make money off dumb pipes. The original statement was nonsensical and hyperbolic, and quite likely to spin off into (further) wrongheaded commentary.

We, that is, the public, would be well served by ISPs that, you know, Provided Internet Service, as opposed to playing mommy and hard-sell facilitator to whatever degree and combination pleased them. Likewise, ISPs could certainly make a rousing business out of doing so. But they'd have fewer revenue avenues. This isn't necessarily the same as "they would earn less money", either.

So, treetrunk. Your ball now. 🗣️👂

The problem here is that internet access is a natural monopoly, much like actual, literal pipes as in the case of water and electricity.

Yet, somehow, the telecoms have bribed^W *convinced* the regulatory powers that be that they deserve all the advantages of a monopoly with none of the regulations.

This also runs counter to the original intent of the internet's infrastructure, which was to build value on top of the pipes, not charge for the pipes themselves beyond a certain point. Rent-seeking will be the death of the free flow of information, with all that that implies.

The real problem is the apathetic public that fears losing the crumbs they get now. Until they stand up and vote the bums out, they will spend the rest of their short lives complaining about it being someone else's fault. The cause of our misfortunes is no mystery. It stares us all in the face when looking at the mirror. So there ya go, apathy, and denial are the problem. Apathy, denial, and avarice, these three simple things are the cause of all our suffering. Apathy, denial, avarice, and insufficient sex, various things that.... Let me come in again.

At one time, there were a bazillion small ISPs that made decent money being dumb pipes.

If we made the last mile a community resource that could be the case again.

The technical advantages of protocols rather than platforms are well understood by now. The business advantage of platforms over protocols are also well understood by now. As long as the western world is under the control of business, the business rules will be what matters.

I'm amazed that Twitter has gotten and remained as big as it has, really: The idea that important ideas can be expressed in a single short sentence is just silly.

It's precisely the kind of silliness that appeals to the masses, though. Twitter is just the "sound bite" in Web 2.0 (3.0? 3.11? 3.11 for Workgroups?) form.

Actually, it doesn't in my experience appeal to the masses as much as it appeals to elites who think it appeals to the masses or is an accurate reflection of what the masses think.
