The first episode of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" was broadcast on PBS on February 19, 1968. Fifty years later, the program is still being shown on public television stations, to the delight of both children and adults. Though he passed away in 2003, Fred Rogers' philosophy continues to influence children's television today.

    PLEASE... PLEASE... PLEASE...

tell me that you copies and pasted that from some lyric page on the internet...

It would be really creepy if you were able to do that from memory.

Why? I must have heard that song a literal minimum of between five hundred and one thousand times? Shouldn't it have imprinted perfectly in my memory in a way that decades won't erase?

But seriously.... no. I got the the first lines perfectly, couldn't quite remember the lead in to "beautywood" and the second part of it but remembered the bridge perfectly and I think I could have pulled off the last verse if I hadn't already Googled it. But I did Google it to make sure I had the lines perfect. The Rev. Fred Rogers deserved no less than the best I could look up. (But seeing the lyrics I can hear the entirety of the song in my head in his voice).

The really Americana part of it is remembering how he'd change from a suit jacket into a sweater, and dress shoes into sneakers to be able to spend time with "us" the audience. And then he'd do the reverse at show close.

And sometimes I'd feel sad during the closing lyrics that the time with him was over. As the kid who was isolated from peers because I was too smart for my own good, he really did feel like a friend and peer. And I learned so much about so much watching that show.

If I could re-live my life and Quantum Leap into anybody else's shoes.... it would have been his sneakers.

    "It's such a good feeling
    To know you're alive.
    It's such a happy feeling;
    You're growing inside.
And when you wake up ready to say:
I think I'll make a snappy new day.
    It's such a good feeling,
    A very good feeling.
    The feeling you know

    That I'll be back
    When the day is new.

And I'll have more ideas for you.
And you'll have things you'll want to talk about.

    I will too."

I too must have heard it literally 1000 times, almost every time over 40 years ago. I too can hear it in his voice... Yet, I would only be able to remember the first verse without help.
