On the one hand, drinking alcohol may make you live longer.

Drinking could help you live longer—that's the good news for happy-hour enthusiasts from a study presented last week at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. According to the study, people who live to 90 or older often drink moderately.

On the other, you might not remember who you are any more.

Heavy drinkers are putting themselves at risk of dementia, according to the largest study of its kind ever conducted.

    Excellent questions!

My response is not binary. It's a little of both.

The conclusion they came to should not have been "drinking helps you live longer." From the sample set the conclusion should have been more nuanced, such as "If you've been drinking all your life and you're over 90, you have a greater probability of living longer if you continue drinking." Anything else is irresponsible and can cause harm, for instance Mr NonDrinker over 90 reads this and starts drinking. He is not represented in the sample at all and due to this he has the potential to shorten his life.

An obvious selection bias does not preclude valid study, the bias has to be considered, transparent and conclusions that don't ignore the bias.
