Disney Inadvertently Exposes Trump's Tax Cut for the Scam It's Been from the Start

When Donald Trump signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act into law, he touted the legislation as a financial boon for American labor. As recently as January, Trump pointed to $1,000 bonuses for employees that American Airlines, AT&T, and Disney have announced as proof corporations would reinvest the billions of dollars they stand to save in their respective workforces. But if the president has offered a vision of how tax cuts for multinational corporations might operate in theory, an unfair labor practice complaint filed Tuesday reveals how they work in practice.

According to the Orange County Register, Unite Here Local 11, a union representing 2,700 housekeepers and other low-wage workers, has accused the Walt Disney Co. of effectively holding its bonuses hostage to secure a more favorable bargaining agreement. Disney is refusing to release the one-time payments "notwithstanding the union's lack of objection", the statement reads. "[The company] has violated its duty to bargain in good faith, and has engaged in conduct that is inherently destructive to rights guaranteed employees under the [National Labor Relations] Act." (For Disney's part, a spokeswoman maintains the company has a "strong offer on the table".)

[...] Regulatory findings released last month indicate [CEO Bob] Iger earned $36.3 million in compensation for 2017, which is $7.6 million less than he made the year before. The average union member at Disney World is paid $10.71 an hour, while just 3,000 employees earn in excess of $15. Disneyland staffers make a fraction more, the beneficiaries of California's decision last month to raise its minimum wage from $10.50 to $11 an hour. Unite Here's latest filing follows a separate complaint by a coalition of unions representing 38,000 Disney World workers in Florida.

Disney is the worst of the worst for employees. You should just be glad you can work there and be sure to smile.

They are at the epicenter of that H1B replacement program that helped get Trump elected.

Disney is a nice bit of resume filler for a lot of people. But most of the people I ask that used to work there said they would never go back. The pay is crappy and the accommodations are pretty poor considering the company.

Disney has no shortage of people willing to work for them. Which is why their wages are considered 'so low'. They worked a union into the mix, for basically minimum wage jobs. Meaning IF Disney could they would pay them less. That is how the market values them.

Want wages to go up? You create more jobs and competition for those people. During the oil boom a few years ago McDonalds had to pay people 15+ an hour to flip burgers. They could not get anyone to come in because those same people could get better paying jobs elsewhere for the same skills.

If you think Trump has anything to do with Disney your dreaming. They have been doing this since before he was born. They will be doing it well after he is gone.

he's a web of disgusting capitalists
Well he is at least honest about it. As he said 'its rigged'. The rest of the cabal like you to think they are helping you. Their propaganda, oh sorry news, designed to make sure you are properly outraged over everything *but* *them*.

This whole article is little more than gewg trying to get his cock stroked about how socialist he is. He can do better and he knows it. But he camps out on the internet pretending he 'knows better'. When most of the time he is full of shit. I refute him all the time.

Also this sites quality has seriously degraded. I gave it a bit of a handwave because 'it was new'. But at this point 4 years on it is clear a few people control the news feed because no one else puts things in there. Yet hacker news is pretty much a running gamut of things of things we would like to talk about here. Like 'the original slashdot'. This sort of shit is little more than 'lets argue who should be paid more' and get your outrage on. Honestly, we should shut it down at this point and just go back to slashdot.

Unions have zero overlap with Socialism.
Where unions exist, they are part of a Capitalist system.

Had I wanted to include something about Socialism, I would have said that the ownership model there is all wrong.

    You are a nitwit.

I refute him all the time

    Prove it.
