A new study showed a link between strong right-wing views and fear of disease and increased concern about hygiene.

The study showed that people who are more offended by bad odors are more likely to support authoritarian leaders, such as Donald Trump.

In the past, disgust at bad odors was important for survival. The scientists suggested that the disgust at unfamiliar odors may be linked to a desire to keep apart from "culturally unfamiliar" groups.

[...] In the new study, 160 people were rated on their aversion to bodily odours on a scale to one five and their responses compared to their political views. It found that each point higher on the disgust scale was associated with feeling 7.5 points more positive towards authoritarian leaders.

[...] It showed that people who were more disgusted by smells were also more likely to vote for Donald Trump than those who were less sensitive.

People will try to sell anything in their quest to undermine Trump.

As a counterpoint, I submit that many of the people I have met who despise Trump most vehemently are seriously messed up people. I'm talking people who get drunk every day, people who make a practice of asking people for money they will never pay back, etc.

Sorry, liberal folks, but if you're looking for a high correlation between whether a person liked Clinton or Trump, the "misfit and loser" pile contains a MUCH higher
    percentage of Clinton fans.

    *
    *
I voted Tor Trump after having voted for Obama twice. I reckon you could say my vote for Trump was my way of saying I have had enough of the people who want everything for free and the people who have no problem taking money away from people who have busted their ass to EARN IT.

    *
    *
And I am going to vote for Trump again, unless the Democrats can come up with something a lot more credible than Clinton or Oprah.

I don't give the slightest fuck what you think of me or my opinions, so I will tell you in advance you can and should go fuck yourself if you disagree with me.

    > I don't give the slightest fuck what you think of me or my opinions, so I will tell you in advance you can and should go fuck yourself if you disagree with me.

Please don't take any part of this as a personal attack -- it's not.

There are a number of studies like this that find psychological differences between conservatives and liberals. Reductionism is never proper, but it makes sense that people with higher general levels of xenophobia ("they're bringing guns, they're bringing crime...") would become conservatives, while people with higher levels of empathy ("let's make sure people don't die because they don't have health insurance" > "fuck them I got mine") would become liberals.

The nice thing, though, is people can change. If you want to develop more empathy, you can. If you want to conquer your fears, you can.

If you don't want to, though, no one can make you. All I can offer is that my life got better the more I started caring more about others and being less afraid of stuff I didn't need to be afraid of. Eventually, after I'd become a far better person than I used to be, God actually reached out to me, to let me know I'm on the right path, to help me help others, to help me continue healing, and to provide the comfort that perhaps this world isn't all there is.

Politics isn't important to spiritual growth, per se, but I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that empathy really is part of the key to a better life, and you can't care about others while you're simultaneously focused on how horrible they are for paying less in taxes, or winning an "argument" (really "insult match") against them.

Another part of the key is respecting yourself -- you are beautiful not because you are better than someone else (like "misfits and losers"), but simply because you have thought, and emotions, and a soul.

Unfortunately, I think everyone has to find this key for himself. Parents can probably help, but many haven't found the key themselves, and just make things worse. But maybe this post, just maybe, can help you or someone else look. It's worth a few minutes of my time to try, anyway.

I've mostly seen atheists and deconverts from the Abrahamic religions go this path, and the more "Christian" someone is, the worse they are as a person, in my experience. This tells me you and said atheists and deconverts have all hit on something fundamental about human nature, but they are predisposed to see it as happening despite some idea of the divine, while you are predisposed to see it as happening because of that idea.

Now, although not atheist myself, I *do* believe based on research into the religions that the former are correct in their approach; hippie humanist Jesus simply is not Biblical. The right-wingers and haters and fundies mostly have the right idea about him. But congrats on coming to the same conclusions about humanity and purpose and there being more than just animal satisfactions of the impulses and ego. I wish more people would do what you did.

There are many paths to enlightenment. Some folk find their way through via religion. Some via atheism / humanism. Some by meditation, some by politics, some through suffering and hardship, and others by yet other routes. They all go to the same place and I suspect GP has found a good road through the "religious" route. Sadly, every path has its pitfalls and dead ends and switchbacks. Not everybody who travels these paths ends up in a good place.

Don't be to quick to assume that GP was lying. I am fairly conservative and I voted for Obama twice, although I regretted it greatly during his second term. I did NOT vote for Trump (I voted for the Libertarian pothead, Gary Johnson) but I would have voted for Trump over Hillary in a New York minute if those were my only two choices. If you only had a choice between Trump and Bernie, which would you pick, out of curiosity?

I still personally feel that the Dems would have won if they had given the nomination to Bernie somehow. Hillary was so repulsive to so many people that they either stayed home, voted 3rd-party (look how many more votes Johnson and Stein got than those parties got in 2012), or voted Trump out of spite.

And if it comes down between Trump and either Hillary or Oprah and if it looks even remotely close, I will vote for Trump and encourage everyone I meet to do so as well. The loony left are already applying chapstick to get ready to bow down and kiss some Hillary and Oprah asses in 2020.

I was a Bernie fan (or "Bernie Bro" as the condescending asshole Hillary supporters called me), but if Oprah gets the nomination in 2020, I'm voting for Trump too. There's no f'in way I'm voting for that snake oil and scam peddler and anti-vax promoter. So far, Oprah has been saying that she has zero interest in running for President in response to the rumors, but that's no guarantee.

It's funny... Although I am registered as a Republican, I considered changing it just for the opportunity to vote for Bernie. But alas, Hillary's minions in the DNC had already rigged it fairly completely before our primary was scheduled. My vote would have been pointless.

I watched Bernie (and others) on all the Sunday shows and he was the ONLY one who answered the damn questions he was asked. Every one of them would go off and answer something completely orthogonal to the question except for him. Hillary was such a lying piece of shit and she behaved as though she was owed the Presidency, I just couldn't stand her. Then when she and her supporters starting talking shit about us deplorables in flyover country AND Bernie's supporters on the opposite side too, I figured she wouldn't win. Thank God I was right.

    seriously messed up people.

As a thought experiment consider a party that links up with a herd of policies, in, lets say, the 60s, they (the policies) turn out to be miserable failures pragmatically and observationally, but human nature is noone wants to admit the emperor has no clothes... Human nature is everything leftward is going to stink metaphorically and physically and self categorization means everything destructive or suicidal will cluster with the pile of existing failure, until that becomes the primary determinant. You can literally look at a policy, determine if its self destructive or suicidal and if so its a leftist position. You'll only be correct maybe 99% of the time, of course.

The self segregation has gotten weird. Obviously the far right of the bell curve of attractiveness will always be "hot" no matter if left or right, but its stunning to compare the physical attractiveness at a general public meeting of, say, my church's Christian youth group, vs a public school teachers union meeting. Holy crap are leftists ugly compared to right wing people. How do you tell if an industry or company is dying? Well that's easy its dominated by leftism. Huh newspapers, magazines, TV, what a coincidence they're all left of Marx AND dying legacy media. Well, its no coincidence.

If you examine the business cycle there are two traits: Unless you flush regularly, like a toilet, the situation in that stage of the cycle stinks after awhile. Also much like the normal logistics curve the good easy stuff is done first, so the "good old days" of the Democrats in the early 60s getting rid of Jim Crow laws and those were in fact good days with good deeds, but my god, the toilet hasn't been flushed in half a century, the left hasn't done anything useful in decades, what a smell... And even lefties are inherently very conservative such that "What we been doing is what we're going to keep doing" until its no longer possible. So you end up with something like the crazy cat lady who won't throw out her hoarded month old rotten food in her kitchen. Hey man lets smoke weed and talk about how communism would be great if "the man" would just give it a try. Come on, it hasn't been 1968 in fifty years, but the left is still stuck back there.

I'd describe the mid 2010s as we're watching the sunset of boomer 60s era leftism and the toilet is clogged so its really stinky, metaphorically and literally.

Its interesting to contemplate the modern alt-right as a reaction to the 60s left being the dominant power for decades past their "use or dispose of" date. So what would a new, post 1960s modern leftism be, and what would rise up to oppose it? Well, I donno.

Darlin, just because something is two clicks off of absolute insanity does not make it sane. Your own position on the capitalism vs. communism scale is coloring your judgment. Badly.

You don't seem to read very well when it comes to things you have strong feelz--excuse me, feelings--about, Uzzard.

Unless you mean there are only 5 "clicks" on this scale from end to end, the New Deal cohort is assuredly not "2 clicks from insanity." Even a worker's collective, such as championed by OriginalOwner, is far closer to Communism than the New Deal. Your lack of both facts and intellectual honesty does not change reality, and anyone who reads your economically-illiterate horseshit can tell what your major malfunction is.
