MIT Tech Review reports on a new study which used computer model to analyze wealth distribution in society. It concludes that the majority of riches do not result from talent, intelligence or hard work - but luck. Those who succeed most in modern society are born well and experience several 'lucky events' which they exploit, but are of mediocre talent. The study's abstract states that the model has potential for encouraging investment in the genuinely gifted, and summarizes:
"...if it is true that some degree of talent is necessary to be successful in life, almost never the most talented people reach the highest peaks of success, being overtaken by mediocre but sensibly luckier individuals. As to our knowledge, this counterintuitive result - although implicitly suggested between the lines in a vast literature - is quantified here for the first time."

Ok, that's it. I'm out of here. This site has become worse than slashdot.

Yup, most articles are filled with knee jerk reactions where everything is academic conspiracies by the progressive elitists, massive campaigns of "hate" towards white men, and fake news where buzzy or some other self proclaimed genius craps all over everything and refuses to acknowledge facts.
Long live the alt-right circle jerk!!!

You might be right, I don't remember such stupid comments like yours on the old site.

Nah, they were there. You just had to sift through a couple hundred GNAA/HOSTS/etc... posts to find them. People taking their ball and going home because they're losing is nothing new.

But it's difficult to be worse than dead. You may not have noticed but Slashdot has been 404 since Thursday last week! The site was very erratic all week, then the editors (msmash) announced they were making some improvements, and then it went down (static). They then announced today that they've fixed it [slashdot.org].
The joke is they are also claiming a DDOS attack during the migration which I simply don't believe. It's the classic excuse for shoddy IT services, since no one else can verify that it occurred.
Anyway, not that anyone cares, but this downtime was just enough for me to get out of my Slashdot checking habit, and now I doubt I'll go back to the site again.
