YouTube wants to debunk conspiracy theory videos using other resources, such as Wikipedia:

In Austin, Texas, on Tuesday, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki told the audience at the South by Southwest Interactive conference that the social video site plans to defuse conspiracy theory content by pairing it with corrective information culled from Wikipedia – a site editable by more or less anyone. However, she neglected to inform Wikipedia, which on Wednesday reacted with bemusement.

In a statement, the crowdsourced encyclopedia's parent, the Wikimedia Foundation, said, "We are always happy to see people, companies and organizations recognize Wikipedia's value as a repository of free knowledge. In this case, neither Wikipedia nor the Wikimedia Foundation are part of a formal partnership with YouTube. We were not given advance notice of this announcement." The foundation urged companies that use Wikipedia's content – that would be YouTube – "to give back in the spirit of sustainability."

Wikipedia contributor Phoebe Ayers framed the issue more bluntly, commenting via Twitter, "It's not polite to treat Wikipedia like an endlessly renewable resource with infinite free labor."

We live in the age of Social Media. And YouTube is one of the hottest Social Media sites, video is so hot right now, right? Countries are paying so much to get their message out on YouTube. Now, this story. YouTube is saying, "oh, we decided to link to your website, many links, and by the way it's totally free." People who do websites would be DIEING to hear that. Any normal person would love to hear it. But these WikiLeaks people go, "oh, so impolite, you should be paying us." What's wrong with them? The election, they put out some brilliant stuff during the election, some amazing and very brutal stuff. Real bad stuff, unbelievable. Big stuff but the press did not report it because honestly without the press, without the media, Hillary Clinton is nothing. She’s nothing, OK? She’s nothing. WikiLeaks released many documents exposing the massive international corruption of the Clinton machine. Scandalous revelations about Hillary Clinton. She would have been the most dishonest and the most corrupt person ever elected to high office. They really did a job on her. It didn't affect the election, none of it affected the election. Because the press did not report it. I loved it, I had a lot of fun with it. But now their heads are COMPLETELY up their asses. Sad!
