Facebook and Cambridge Analytica are already dealing with numerous private lawsuits over non-consensual data sharing, but they now have to grapple with a state-level lawsuit. Illinois' Cook County has filed a lawsuit against both companies accusing them of violating the state's Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act. Cambridge Analytica allegedly broke the law by misrepresenting its "thisisyourdigitallife" app as an academic research tool when it was really meant to harvest personal data against Facebook's agreements. Facebook, meanwhile, was accused of falsely promising to protect user data and doing nothing to stop Cambridge Analytica for years after learning of its behavior.

But... they're suing facebook because of it.

Chicago is filled with competing monitoring solutions, no doubts about it (E911 there can determine what *chair* you sat in in a restaurant on any floor of a given building... or just where you are. Provided you leave your cell phone on with the defaults enabled...no facebook or google required, but they can get much of that info too).

One thing I have come to understand is that good and evil is not always, and sometimes, to do some evil you have to do a little good. The inverse is also true...

I don't know what they hope to get out of it, but I am hoping there are more lawsuits just like it -- whether the mayor is stereotypically something or not.

For the first time ever, I have been hearing non-IT people talk about the privacy violations and hoping for change to clamp things down. They recognize privacy is not the same as security, which is very hard for many people to grasp.

If more cities and places follow this lead and sue for the privacy violations and related problems, change just might happen... even if only because of the costs to defend the old business practices becoming too great, than any real love of their product (being us people).

You're too harsh. Didn't you see that he apologized [vanityfair.com] and is very sorry?
