Facebook and Cambridge Analytica are already dealing with numerous private lawsuits over non-consensual data sharing, but they now have to grapple with a state-level lawsuit. Illinois' Cook County has filed a lawsuit against both companies accusing them of violating the state's Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act. Cambridge Analytica allegedly broke the law by misrepresenting its "thisisyourdigitallife" app as an academic research tool when it was really meant to harvest personal data against Facebook's agreements. Facebook, meanwhile, was accused of falsely promising to protect user data and doing nothing to stop Cambridge Analytica for years after learning of its behavior.

From time to time I deposit a $2,200 cashiers check that was originally payable to R.

    R. signs them over to me.

The first couple times my credit union put a five-day hold on them, but I've done this so many times the tellers are no longer worried about it.

I deposited one such paycheck this morning. The tellers all really like me there because I prefer not to use ATMs.

"R.'s a good guy," I said, "but he really values his privacy."

    R. does not possess identification of any kind.

Happily, his $2,200 more than covered an overdraft that resulted from my confusion and a Burrito Supreme Combo.

Rod lives all the way on the other side of the Universe so I don't see him all that often. But if you want to - hopefully figuratively - make a killing, just beat me up then rob me any time between 10:00 Friday morning and 6:00 Sunday evening.

See, I'll have more than two grand in my pocket.

Who on Earth could this R. character be? Oh he values his privacy, OK got it. I will not bother Rod then!

PS: mugging someone for a paycheck isn't the smartest robbery around, would be pretty hard to cash/deposit a check not in your own name.

Sorry I should have been more clear:

Just before 10:00 Friday morning I'm going to withdraw two grand and a couple bills, then meet up with R. to hand over his loot.

Instead of stealing the check just get him to write a check in your name then - problem solved.

Obviously, you've never been to an inner-city liquor store. You can cash ANY check, in ANYONES name, as long as it is valid when they check it.
