Amazon and Google, the leading sellers of such devices, say the assistants record and process audio only after users trigger them by pushing a button or uttering a phrase like "Hey, Alexa" or "O.K., Google." But each company has filed patent applications, many of them still under consideration, that outline an array of possibilities for how devices like these could monitor more of what users say and do. That information could then be used to identify a person's desires or interests, which could be mined for ads and product recommendations.
For many, this could change the landscape as to whether these devices are acceptable. It may also open the door wider for open-source, less invasive devices such as Mycroft.

...how people buy these spy devices with a trust in the manufacturers that nothing other than their own preconceived expectations are occurring, then get all creeped out and upset when some whistleblower blows the lid on nefarious uses of their highly private activities or info.
These are surveillance electronics with closed source software and the only thing people can judge on what its doing is from the marketing. Who actually knows what its collecting and where its sending it.

almost everyone I know that has one, received one as a gift beacuse the giver thought it would be cool, saw it was on sale and didn't know what else to get the person. the decision was easy when its made for you
some people I know got multiples because of that.
almost all of them pay no attention to eulas
now, advertising will make the decisions easier for them based on what is learned from the various spying for profit rather than for king and country.
