There’s no way to sugarcoat this message: Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg believes North America users of his platform deserve a lower data protection standard than people everywhere else in the world.

In a phone interview with Reuters yesterday Mark Zuckerberg declined to commit to universally implementing changes to the platform that are necessary to comply with the European Union's incoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Rather, he said the company was working on a version of the law that would bring some European privacy guarantees worldwide — declining to specify to the reporter which parts of the law would not extend worldwide.

"We're still nailing down details on this, but it should directionally be, in spirit, the whole thing," Reuters quotes Zuckerberg on the GDPR question.

This is a subtle shift of line. Facebook's leadership has previously implied the product changes it's making to comply with GDPR's incoming data protection standard would be extended globally.

[...] On the speculation front, consent under GDPR for processing personal data means offering individuals "genuine choice and control", as the UK's data watchdog explains it. So perhaps Facebook isn't comfortable about giving North American users that kind of autonomy to revoke specific consents at will.

I think it would be richly deserved.

Anyone who wonders why many people in the world dislike Jews need only look at how Zuckerberg behaves.

Modded troll. And, probably deserved. We can't deny that some of our users - anon or otherwise - have an unreasonable fear/hatred of Jews.

On the other hand, AC makes a valid point. We all represent some group or another. Most of us are representatives of multiple groups. If you served in the military, you were indoctrinated with the idea that you are an Ambassador of the United States. You are white or black or brown. You are male or female. You are old or young. You represent whoever and whatever you are, everywhere you go. If you're a bigoted, racist white dude, people who aren't white remember you. You affect their perceptions of white people, every time you interact with them.

In this case, AC makes a point that Zuck is a despicable shit. And, being a despicable shit who is Jewish does reflect on Jews.

Zuck isn't complying with EU law by choice. He is complying out of coercion and necessity. He sees no reason to offer the same protections that he is forced to give Europeans to anyone who is not European.

I approve of all the people who are dumping Facebook. Zuck needs to learn a lesson or ten. Corporate America needs to learn those lessons. Prying into people's personal lives for profit is what despicable shits do. It's not something that Jews want to be known for. It's not something that any of us want to be known for.

It's always been harsh on "the new guy". There were lots of "no dogs or Irish" signs if you go back a bit.

OTOH, people have a strong tendency to pick small visible groups to malign. (You've got to be a large enough group to be interesting, or you just get ignored.) Groups that are small and intentionally act strangely are almost begging to be persecuted, and this is a selection of groups that those of the jewish faith traditionally fall into.

That said, some people are just bigots, and dislike anyone who's different. All groups of any size include some sociopaths. Unfortunately, group dynamics often let such people acquire and maintain power. This is a basic defect in humanity, much stronger than their moderate inherited xenophobia. I'd say that groups that accept and encourage such people deserve the be isolated, but I haven't encountered any that don't. It's a remnant of tribalism that seems to be genetic (the accepting of such people, I'm not sure about the behavior itself).

I disagree. If I go somewhere, and target a black person to treat like shit, that black person may or may not put up with my shit for awhile. But, eventually, he'll respond with comments that include words like cracker, honkey, lily-white, etc. No matter whether you are minority or majority, you represent whatever group you belong to. If I were to start dumping on Catholics, I could expect responses about how stupid Protestants are. And, we see comments right here on Soylent about how stupid all people are who even believe in a God. So, no, it isn't just minorities who get picked on.

You can only treat people as individuals if you know them as individuals. But you don't need to consider each person the synecdoche of the group.

how about we just agree that no matter what kind of physical human he is and forget whats in a name, can we agree that someone has to slap a sense of humanity into him instead of his outrageous disregard for the common person in his efforts to monetize peoples lives as if they were products?

Hm. By that logic, isn't the fact that Jews have been ostracized by many cultures throughout history suggest that there is a statistically significantly higher proportion of Jewish assholes than assholes of other colors/races/sexes/cultures?

Of course, that still doesn't mean all Jews are assholes, but that there's a higher probability than for non-Jews.

Cool. I can follow your reasoning. But, let's take that a little further, or at least on a slight tangent. Which of us (us, being human beings) have not been persecuted on multiple occassions, throughout history?

The Jews are at the same disadvantage that the Romany are. They are a people who were dispossessed of their homeland, long ago in history. Neither group "belongs" anywhere. The Jews have their homeland back, for the past few decades. The Romany still don't. How many other peoples have been at such a disadvantage, within recent history?

Even the Eastern Europeans under the Soviet still retained a homeland, even if many of their people couldn't return home. Not having a home to call home kinda puts people in a special little niche, that few of the rest of us even attempt to understand.

the fact that Jews have been ostracized by many cultures throughout history...

Well, if by many you mean many European cultures, or, as it was known until early modern times, Christendom.

That would be the people who decided "the Jews" murdered that nice Mr. Christ.

They also had laws against loaning each other money and charging interest, making Jews the only people who could profit from banking which has always been hugely profitable.

Curiously the various massacres and expulsions of Jews from various European countries during those times tended to coincide with the local ruler being unable to pay whatever massive loan he had with a Jewish banking house.

You should read some history. It might give you some context for your racism.
