There’s no way to sugarcoat this message: Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg believes North America users of his platform deserve a lower data protection standard than people everywhere else in the world.

In a phone interview with Reuters yesterday Mark Zuckerberg declined to commit to universally implementing changes to the platform that are necessary to comply with the European Union's incoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Rather, he said the company was working on a version of the law that would bring some European privacy guarantees worldwide — declining to specify to the reporter which parts of the law would not extend worldwide.

"We're still nailing down details on this, but it should directionally be, in spirit, the whole thing," Reuters quotes Zuckerberg on the GDPR question.

This is a subtle shift of line. Facebook's leadership has previously implied the product changes it's making to comply with GDPR's incoming data protection standard would be extended globally.

[...] On the speculation front, consent under GDPR for processing personal data means offering individuals "genuine choice and control", as the UK's data watchdog explains it. So perhaps Facebook isn't comfortable about giving North American users that kind of autonomy to revoke specific consents at will.

While this is true, it would be nice if we didn't have to put a gun to a guy's head to get him to show some respect. It only shows that we really aren't more advanced than the animals if this is what it takes to get people to behave

Capitalism - where you take care of your own self interest.
Considerations for the interest of others are "self-interest considerations" - you consider the interest of others only if the cost of doing so is less than the cost of disregarding it (or even if you are a moron and choose to take the less optimal approach, but you can afford to do it without dying).

For those who see"socialism" as a dirty word, consider that most european countries are social-democracies [wikipedia.org]:

Social democracy is a political, social and economic ideology that supports economic and social interventions to promote social justice within the framework of a liberal democratic polity and capitalist economy.

Translation: you don't have the "liberty of wild-west capitalism", fairness is agreed as a principle around which the society organizes.
(For die-hard american libertarians and conservatives: yes, social-democracy comes with a cost; the people in those countries agree to pay it, they can do what they wish with their money).

Capitalism is simple 'talking chimps economics'. While it's perfectly natural, it's not particularly human. The concept deserves no special attention or explanation. Everything about it is totally self evident.

All I know is that we will make no further progress until we can show respect without being forced. I believe the internet meme is *good without god*.

Many (conservative and libertarian USians) will totally disagree with you. For them, there are other values (above "unconditional respect for any individual" or "social fairness") that should govern the society of their dream.

Gee, ya think? (Sorry) They don't want to be compared to monkeys. But despite their claim of eminent brilliance, that's all the system is. Nothing has changed over the millions of years except the complexity of growing to scale.

This is true. I want to make sure there is a powerful rich ruling class that has all the capital and thus all the power. I identify with this class, because all those low life poor people are just scum. I don't want to be around them.

One day I'll be part of that upper class. They'll let me in and I'll be living the dream.

Meanwhile, I'm working my butt off in three jobs paying the rent. But, one day, I'll be rich.

        ...50 years later...

Damn, this nursing home is a bitch with all the scabies and smell of old people. One day those rich guys are going to come and get, and I'll be living the dream.

... 10 years later... at the gates of St Peter.

Hey, God, what gives, why didn't you give me more lucky breaks to get rich?

What, you gave the breaks the rich guys who deserved it so much more than me?

I'm so glad I supported those rich guys all my life, even though they did everything to make my life harder and harsher. At, least I can come in to heaven where all the rich guys are!

        What? Only poor people here?

WTF? Send me to hell to burn in fire and brimstone! At least I'll be with those sociopathic money hoarding rich guys I supported all my life!
