For one brave man, eating one of the hottest peppers in the world came with an unexpected side effect: Days of splitting headaches that prompted a trip to the emergency room.

The unusual case, detailed in The BMJ on Monday, began immediately after the 34-year-old man took part in a chili pepper eating contest. He ate a Carolina Reaper, the pepper christened as the world's hottest by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2013 (though there have been several unofficial challengers to the title since).

Immediately after eating the pepper, he started dry heaving. Then he felt excruciating neck pain that soon radiated throughout his entire head. For the next several days, he would experience short but incredibly painful bursts of head pain known as thunderclap headaches. The episodes got so bad that he eventually visited the ER.

Thankfully, a brain scan didn't reveal any major neurological issues, such as a bulged blood vessel (aneurysm) or bleeding. But several of his arteries did appear to narrow significantly, a condition called reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS).

RCVS is known to cause thunderclap headaches, and can be brought on by reactions to drugs, including cocaine and certain antidepressants. No case of RCVS has ever been associated with pepper-eating, but the main ingredient that accounts for a pepper's spiciness—capsaicin—is known to interact with our blood vessels, either by constricting or dilating them, the doctors noted. And cayenne peppers have been rarely linked to heart attacks or suddenly constricted arteries near the heart.

The Carolina Reaper was the world's hottest pepper at the time of the incident, but two varieties have surpassed it unofficially: Dragon's Breath, developed by Neal Price, NPK Technology, and Nottingham Trent University for anesthetic research, and Pepper X, created by the breeder of the Carolina Reaper, Ed Currie.

The really sad thing about this spammer is that he's got me thinking about filtering out -1 posts. I want to see the trolls because sometimes I disagree that they are trolls. This is especially true in politics stories, where I end up modding up people on both sides whose argument must have been lost on some moderator too focused on their emotions.

If this noisy garbage doesn't stop, I may end up filtering out the supposed trolls to avoid it. And that is bad for everyone.

Ideally, what we really need is just a setting which filters out all spam mods, and encourage the use of those for these cases. I don't this I have personally noticed any incorrect spam mods, and they are supposed to be individually reviewed, which makes a fine argument against this plan, cause you are going to increate the workload on whoever is supposed to be reviewing each spam mod.

If you mean a comment is modded both Spam and Troll and the -6 Spam modifier doesn't apply, then I don't know what the issue is.

If you mean a comment just modded Troll, then you can also add a modifier for Troll mods if you want.

The preferences [soylentnews.org] allow you to add -6 to +6 modifiers to all of the moderation reasons, including Spam, Troll, Disagree, Insightful, etc., comments by Friend/Fan/Foe/Freaks and Friends of Friends and Foes of Friends, Anonymous Coward comments, comments where the user chose to post with karma bonus (default is 1, but you can give them 0 or -6 instead), comments by new users (you choose the % that qualify as "new"), and comments that are small or long (you define the length in bytes).

Personally, I think this person should be reported to DHS or the FBI. How long till they get tired of fantasizing and turn to actually causing harm?

Given that this particular troll regularly obsesses about rape fantasies, I don't think it is at all out of line to report this to law enforcement. At the very least, he appears to be mentally ill. At worst, he is a tragedy waiting to happen. Has anyone actually reported this to police yet?

I don't think so... Maybe he is serious, but I always thought these were satiric anti-"men's rights" troll posts. It's annoying as hell either way.
