President Rouhani warns that White House failure to uphold Iran nuclear deal would prompt firm reaction from Tehran.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has called on US President Donald Trump to uphold the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers, or "face severe consequences".

In a televised speech, Rouhani said the "Iranian government will react firmly" if the White House fails to "live up to their commitments" under the agreement.

The warning comes weeks in advance of a May 12 deadline for Trump to renew the deal.

The US president has previously said he would scrap the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which he has called the "worst deal in history", unless "a better option" is presented to him.

[...] The landmark deal reached in Lausanne, Switzerland in April 2015 with China, Russia, France, Great Britain, Germany and the US offered Iran more than $110bn a year in sanctions relief and a return to the global economy in exchange for halting its drive for a nuclear weapon.

This is exactly why Iran needs nukes: they can't trust other countries to uphold international agreements. Nobody can, but Iran has very clear examples of this past and present. There are no words that are as dependable as the ability to strike back.

North Korea is also doing the same thing, for the same reason. Kim Jong Un was so focused on getting nukes that could strike the US because he knew that was the key to his very survival. He didn't need Trump to tell him that, he could just look at the fates of Mohammad Mosaddegh, Saddam Hussein, Muammar Qaddafi, and lots of other leaders of countries the US has taken an irrational dislike to.

Mohammad Mosaddegh nationalized foreign-controlled oil, Saddam Hussein had started selling oil in Euros, and Muammar Qaddafi was planning to sell oil in gold dinars (in addition to having nationalized a controlling share of oil companies significantly earlier). I'm not saying there weren't other factors, but I feel like these moves were fairly rational from the perspective of a dying hegemony trying to hold onto power by means of the petrodollar. Besides being pedantic about the word "irrational," I agree with your post.

There was a failed coup fifteen years ago, of course. I have no guesses as to when the next one will come, or what form it will take.

Right now, they're banking on the ruling party and President Maduro losing the next election. The CIA is doing everything in its power to make sure that's what happens. Just like how they jailed the former ruling party in Brazil.

Yeah, but Maduro is getting ready to drop a new constitution. I'm not convinced he'll leave office just because of an election.
