Pennsylvania State University orders student groups to disband

BBC News reports:

A US college outdoors club is being disbanded because its activities, which include hiking, running and backpacking, are deemed too risky.

Pennsylvania State University officials said the group will be reconstituted to focus more on safety.

The 98-year-old Outing Club is one of three that will be disbanded from next semester: the caving and scuba clubs have also been deemed unsafe.

It's ridiculous that you have to go through all that paperwork. We are creating a bureaucrat's paradise. Funny how personal the reasons are for doing this, but the old lady won't give it up until you give her brother a cushy tenured position.

In the time I was in university, I don't think there was a single year in which there weren't several injuries involving a trip to hospital as a result of some of the activities run by student societies (mostly the sports clubs). It's not particularly unreasonable to make sure that people organising these activities are properly documenting the risks involved so that the insurance company will pay up if required and so that the limits on liability are well defined. I'd much rather that than the alternative: that if someone was injured at an event that I organised that I'd be personally liable.

Well, that's just it. The participants should carry their own damn insurance. The organizers aren't responsible for the choices other people make.
