North Korea's Kim Jong-un crosses into South Korea

Kim Jong-un has become the first North Korean leader to set foot in South Korea by crossing the military line that has divided the peninsula since the end of the Korean War in 1953. In a moment rich with symbolism and pomp, South Korean leader Moon Jae-in and Mr Kim shook hands at the border. Mr Kim said he hoped for "frank" discussion in a warm opening exchange.

Just months ago North Korean rhetoric was warlike, but now they may discuss a peace treaty and nuclear weapons. Much of what the summit will focus on has been agreed in advance, but many analysts remain deeply sceptical about the North's apparent enthusiasm for engagement.

Also at The Guardian (live) and Reuters:

During their private meeting, Kim told Moon he came to the summit to end the history of conflict and joked he was sorry for keeping Moon up with his late night missile tests, a South Korean official said.

North Korea's nuclear site collapse may be reason Kim Jong Un ceased bomb tests, scientists say

North Korea's nuclear test site has collapsed after the region sustained damage from five nuclear blast trials, Chinese scientists said Wednesday — leading many to believe it may be the reason why Kim Jong Un suddenly announced the rogue regime would freeze its nuclear and missile tests.

Y'all thought Trump was going to start a nuclear war, especially when he started off 2018 with a tweet about having a working button to nuke North Korea. He knew what he was doing. It just looks foolish because your own understanding is lower and because you are blinded by hate.

Enjoy the history of the interaction, with a couple bonus photos of the leaders meeting:

I heard there is statistically significant evidence from GWAS studies that trump voting is genetically determined rather than a choice. Secret gene editing trials are currently underway in mice to see if they can knock out the "trump gene" (znf711). https://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/gene/ZNF711 [nih.gov]

If true, this could mean discriminating against trump voters is, and has been, illegal.

Thank you for your beautiful support! People tell me all the time, "we love you, President Trump, you're doing an amazing job!" It's what I live for. Trust me, I will never start a nuclear war. Unless it's in the interest of the American people. But I was very serious when I wrote about my Nuclear Button. It's the best. So many people say President Putin's is terrific, mine is better than his. He may have more missiles, but mine work better. And they work much better than Chairman Kim's. Also, I have many, many more than he does. And I'm upgrading them amazingly. Very smart folks working on making my nuclear arsenal PERFECTO. He exploded maybe 1 H-bomb. My Generals say probably not "H," probably "boosted." And "boosted" is nothing special, that one's very easy. We INVENTED H-bombs. We tested so many. And we have so many. More than enough to take care of Chairman Kim and his friends. We can take care of them very well, believe me. If they want a fight, I'll fight back. And it will be devastating, the likes of which this world has NEVER seen!!!!

Let me tell you, I'm disappointed in Chairman Kim. About his test site. He tried to trick me, he thought he could trick me. He didn't trick me. Obviously he didn't, my Generals told me all along his I said his offer was big progress. I said it was big, I was being nice, it's not that big. No more "nice." I'm doing "tough" & "smart." I'm a tremendous actor. And I'm bringing some very tough & smart folks. I've got Mike Pompeo, my brand new Secretary of State (congrats Mike!). I've got John Bolton. And the Swedish ambassador. We're going to meet. We're going to talk. It's gonna be great. But VERY FAIR to America. And no more tricks!

I'm not really getting the "hate" vibe from most of my fellow lefties and other never-Trumpers. It's more of a "blinded by very low opinion". I still think I'm right, BTW. Every now and then he'll do or say something decent, or even insightful, but it's so rare it looks more like blind chance :-(

Kind of depressing that blind chance and an insane man got us closer to peace in 2018 than any of the rational men in the past fifty years.

Even if you don't want to give credit to Trump, we would not be where we are today with North Korea if Hillary had been elected.

No, he still has no clue. [google.com] Really. No, really. [nbcnews.com] You're seeing it as rhetoric. What if it isn't? [nymag.com] What dice are you willing to roll?

Yes, he has the temperament and personality that can get us into a shooting war, or worse. He wants to disengage from Syria, then turns right around and fires missiles at them. He threatens about the nuclear button and then sure he'll negotiate.

No, that's not particularly a good thing. [gq-magazine.co.uk]

Yes, the two sides are meeting.

No, that doesn't mean they're going to reach agreement on nuclear dismantlement.

If Trump has an overall plan, let him lay it out. Otherwise I'll just continue believing, as the evidence has clearly shown, that he doesn't have a clue and is making all this stuff up from his gut as his impulses strike him to do so. And keep on making what preparations I can for when he does actually push that button as he's made clear he can do.

Trump wins, and not because he let's dumb-asses like you goad him into revealing his hand.

If you followed the events you would know rough framework of his plan, he got Xi to agree on total disarmament, and Xi put screws on Kimmy to come to the table. Kimmy was scared Xi would try to depose him, because for all his shit-talk his regime would last about a day if China wanted him gone. He had his brother killed to try to prevent what he thought was the most likely way China would get rid of him, wants to get ahead of the thumbscrews-Xi, and thinks if he does he can win concessions from Trump. Trump already expected this, and will give him "concessions" that he was always prepared to give to get the deal done. Most likely he will move US troops around Asian-Pacific, and swapping land forces with Naval forces to maintain balance vs China and cut costs.

Yes Kimmy's nuke tunnel collapsed, but he is not keen on making a new one because for all he knows Trump would stop it (He doesn't fuck around). In the end just because it suits Kim to make a deal now, it doesn't mean it's not good for everyone. Reunification will not happen in Kim's lifetime, but there could be trade and there could be peace.

Why do you believe that reunification is not going to happen? This is the best option, as the world will not allow him to remain rogue. His country is very poor. The best time for reuni talks is now, when Kim has nuclear bombs and thus safe from an invasion. He comes to the talks not as a poor brother, but as a strong player. If he does not push for reuni, he will die. If he does, he will retain executive power in the north for a while and will be deified for ending the war and unifying the country. It's worth something.

As far as the credit-for-meeting, in my opinion it's about the circumstances. Sanctions can starve people already of borderline health such that it WAS seen as heartless by the world. Plus, China doesn't want refugees flooding in. But NK's recent WMD successes and threats change the sanction pressure and realities enough that Kim realizes his country is now more likely to be starved to death. The collapsed testing site also highlights the problems and resources necessary to maintain such systems. Therefore, he's more open to negotiations than before.
